20297 2001-10-06 08:25:00 I am considering a first move into CD R/W and would appreciate any suggestions as to what to purchase in the $300-350 range.
I am running an AMD DX2 500 with 256K ram.
The purchase would not be getting heavy use, in this home environment.

Thak you for your suggestions

20299 2001-10-06 09:24:00 You can't go wrong with a HP CD Writer. Hewlett-packard provide a quality CD re-writer for approx. $300 incl. GST.

The 9100 has a speed rating of 8 x 4 x 32 (write, re-write, read) and has a 2Mb buffer to prevent underruns.

It also comes bundled with: Adaptec Direct CD 3.01, HP MyCD, HP Fast Format, HP Simple Backup,
HP Music Jukebox, CD Labeler

20300 2001-10-07 06:22:00 I highly recommend a BTC 8x4x32 CDRW drive. They cost a little less than $200 and are very good. It's a Philips underneath it all.

Good Luck JM

20302 2001-10-08 04:41:00 I was using a acer 4x4x 32 and was happy with it but have just upgraded to a diamond data 32x10x4 I use cd creator 5 which is excellent, can sell you my old 4 speed if you want for $180 plus cd creator 5. Guest (0)
20303 2001-10-08 11:19:00 Thanks for the offer. At this stage I am still checking out.
I'm told write speed is not a case of faster = better and that a decent buffer is essential.

I have to admit being confused after getting several different recommendations and browsing retail lists.

What are the pitfalls to look out for? I'm told there is little between major brands and related software???

Thanks, but for now, no thanks.

20304 2001-10-10 21:24:00 I'd have to recommend getting an HP. I've put in at least 5 of these and they are so much more robust.

Had regular problems with Zip and with Cyberdrive....

Check out www.corpcons.co.nz who usually have the best deals for HP CDRW's.

Good luck.

20305 2001-10-11 01:31:00 Thank you and others for suggestions. I've checked out Hp prices and they are a bit rich for my blood!

Thanks to all for advice. I am now much better informed and PCWorld F1 is a great place for sharing.
