20307	2001-10-06 08:01:00	Giddy all, I am a newbie to computer networking and want to network two computers we have at home. I basically want to share a printer and scanner between the two computers as well as doing a bit of gaming with both machines. I'm therefore after a bit of advice on the best way to go about it. One computer is running a Duron 700, 256MB RAM, Windows 2000 Professional with 2 x 20GB hard drives. The other computer is an AMD K6-2+ 500, 128MB RAM running Windows 98 with a couple of smallish hard drives. Both are home-built machines. I was planning on getting two fairly cheap network cards for each computer and then linking them by cable. Can somebody give me some step-by-step instructions on how to go about it once I have the cards installed? Otherwise, could someone point me in the direction of a good website which explains it well? Does it matter that one OS is Windows 2K and the other is Win98? Many thanks Darryl Lennane	Guest (0)

20310	2001-10-06 11:55:00	Hi there Dick Smith have 10/100 (20/200 duplex)fast ethernet cards for less than $35.00ea at the moment. Buy two of these, install one in each PC with the supplied driver, buy a 'cat 5 crossover' cable to connect the two and then you need to configure each PC. 20311	2001-10-07 02:34:00	Hi. Head over to Dicky Smith's and grap 2 PCI 10/100 Network cards and a Crossover Cable of how ever long you need it. Bang the cards in a spare PCI slot. Turn it on, Winblows will ask for the driver, put the floppy disk that came with the card in and point to A: Once thats in and prolly after a restart, right click on Network Neighbourhood and in the Configuration.. Change Primary Network Logon to Windows Logon. Click on File and Printer Sharing and tick both boxs in there. Now click Add, Click on Protocol, then Microsoft, then on the right select IPX/SPX compatible Protocol, click OK. Click Add again, Microsoft, and on the right scroll down to NetBEUI, select it and OK. Now in Configuration select IPX/SPX on the Dial-up Adapter and Remove. Then select NetBEUI on the Dial-up Adapter and Remove. The IPX/SPX and NetBEUI are for the Network card only, nothing to do with the internet (TCP/IP). In Identification give your computer a name and make sure that the Workgroup is Workgroup. Both puters must be on the same Workgroup. Now open My Computer and right click on C: and select Sharing, select Shared As, you can put a name in there if you feel like, and make it Read Only. You'll need you OS in the CD ROM when doing all this and will need to restart to finish the job. Nothing major involved. Good luck :) Ken.	Guest (0)
