20261 2001-10-06 04:47:00 I'm shortly looking to purchase a new PC system. The ones I've looked at have had a Shuttle AK31 KT266 motherboard.
I have been told by a few people I'd be better off to buy an Asus m/board, but others have said there are no performance differences. The Asus boards seem to be more expensive.
Any comments or suggestions regarding the best brand?

PS System will likely be running a Athlon 1.4GHz CPU, 512MB Ram, 40 GB H/D, 64MB vid card.

20262 2001-10-06 05:21:00 It's just like asking 'Would you buy a Sony TV or a Transonic one?'

You might pay more for one brand, but you know that it will last the distance.

I can't say I ever heard of Shuttle motherboards, they may very well make perfectly good products, but if I had the choice I would most certainly go with the Asus one.

20263 2001-10-06 05:38:00 I have had a few Asus boards and I would definately go with one of those as they might be a bit more expensive but they are quality boards.

I talked to a local assembler using Asus mobos and he said the same thing - they do alot of testing and all components are quality, but the same might be said for abit, gigabyte etc.

20264 2001-10-06 05:44:00 Another good socket A board, which I recently bought after a lot of 'research' is the ABIT KT7A.
There is also a KT7A-RAID version.
These boards will take up to Athlon 1.4Ghz. They are medium priced.

20265 2001-10-06 05:44:00 Check out the reviews of different boards. Performance is usually a good indicator of quality, as it is pretty hard to make a high performance board with shoddy components. A good place to start is here: www4.tomshardware.com
I would also keep in mind future upgrading, and buy a board designed to also run much faster chips than one you plan to buy.

20266 2001-10-06 05:51:00 I had 5 computers(from P100 to PIII 866) in my family and all of them are using Asus motherboard. All my friends are using Asus motherboard. Why? because it provide a lot of bios update on the web. Sometimes, the problem can only be solved by updating the bios. beside from that, you can also dl user manual and drivers. Not saying other brands motherboard are not good but when you faced some Compatibility problem, bios update could be the only solution you got and sometime, the cheap motherboard just don't have what you need. Yes, it is a bit more expensive but I found that it is worth it. Of course it is just my opinion. Guest (0)
20267 2001-10-06 05:58:00 if you are looking at a ddr motherboard hold off buying for a little while. the kt266 chipset boards are slow but there is the new kt266A chipset out which looks to be the fastest amd chipset built so far.
gigabyte has released one, other manafactures should be following shortly.

20268 2001-10-06 06:48:00 Hello Tony,
If you are thinking of going the SDRam way, the Soltek KAV is an excellent board it supports Athlons to the spec you require and has been rated as good or better as the Asus by reviewers such as TomsHardware and Overclocker.com.
The Ddr version is also a very good board but is more upper middle of the pack.
Price performance wise though these boards take a lot of beating, available for around $300.00
