21055 2001-10-11 19:58:00 I recently bought a new computer, but want to keep our old pentium 100 Toshiba laptop. I bought a parallel cable, and am able to hook up the 2 computers by way of LapLink (but not MS's Direct Cable COnnection). Unfortunately, this means I am able to transfer files and thats all.

Is it possible to network 2 computers by using a parallel cable?

21056 2001-10-12 06:25:00 The only way I Know of is with direct cable connection, over a parallel cable.

Just out of curiosity why can't you use direct cable connection?

What did you want to do with the network? With DCC you can share files and printers.

21058 2001-10-12 08:56:00 I wanted to set up an IPX connection (I think thats it...?) because (generally) all games recognize that so I can play multiplayer. Plus printer, file, and if possible, connection (to the internet) sharing.

When I try to use DCC, i get 'Parallel cable disconnected.' after it tries to connect.

21059 2001-10-12 11:14:00 it may be because you have a printer installed (not connected of course) and they customise the parallel port Guest (0)
21060 2001-10-12 12:13:00 The main thing is, in the BIOS Setup, the parallel port needs to be setup as EPP on both machines for Direct cable connection over parallel port.

Pin Connections for a Parallel Cable

Make a parallel cable with male DB-25 connectors at both ends. Eleven wires
are required for data transmission.

21061 2001-10-13 04:52:00 well, im not sure about the connections, they both look exactly the same, female, just like my printer plug. 25 pin each.

and im not sure about my BIOS settings, but i think they should be fine, as it worked with laplink. is this correct?
