21085 2001-10-12 01:49:00 Hi Greg. What I would do is go to your modem Vendor's website and download the latest modem driver. Then go into 'Device Manager' and select 'Remove' to get rid it. Next, reboot. Now, run the driver application and then check in Device manager to make sure everything is ok. If you run into trouble (your modem download is not working) in Windows ME just use system restore. If you are using Win 98 then reboot to DOS and type this command at the prompt: scanreg /restore
This will bring up your restore dates where you can just select the date before you had problems.
I had a similar slow connection problem with my ISP 'Slingshot'. After many emails, I finally got a useful reply back to say that some modems are not recognised by them at their end so they deafult to 31200 kps. This was really frustrating because I had always connected at 52000 kps. Everything is ok now after downloading the latest drivers. Use this link to check the modem that applies to you: www.windrivers.com
Hope it works out ok for you.

21086 2001-10-12 05:12:00 I used to connect at 52, and one day my computer just started connecting at 53.2, now if only I could get adsl..... Guest (0)
21087 2001-10-12 05:55:00 My connection used to be 48000 max, then, a satelite dish got installed and now I cruise at up to 1500000. It's amazing how many MP3s you can download in an hour... and how many website you can browse simultaneously. Guest (0)
21088 2001-10-12 06:37:00 Hi again Greg.
Just a quick note. When I said 'Then go into 'Device Manager' and select 'Remove' to get rid it', I of course mean that you need to remove the pervious modem you have before installing the new one. Regards Mike.

21089 2001-10-12 08:30:00 The problem could just be because of a setting. Try looking in Control Panel > Modems > Select modem and hit properties > Check the maximum speed frame. It should be the last on the list and 'only connect at this speed' should probably be off. Guest (0)

21091 2001-10-12 23:11:00 As far as I'm aware NZ is now on the Southern Cross cable.

A week or so ago the Telstra Australia cable which goes out via Perth through Asia was snagged by a ships anchor.
The upshot of this was that nearly all of Australia is now using the SC cable.

Congestion has gotten pretty bad (last night 3500ms to Los California)and I'm wondering whether NZ is feeling the effect of it also.
