| 1280765 | 2012-06-09 22:53:00 | OK. we've settled on a 64 bit [B]desktop[B] mid tower. 500 GB Hard disc; more than enough for me. No monitor I just bought a new 16:9 LED. Win. 7 home premium. No software. Open-source is better. To connect to the internet via cable. Sound card, Video card. 2 bays for optical drives. Have I forgotten anything? Tell me |

| 1280766 | 2012-06-09 22:55:00 | Well things like what you want to do with it, power supply, ram, keyboards, mouse, etc. Probably best to take it to somewhere like computerlounge (.co.nz), they've got helpful staff over there who can build within a budget and give you a discount for a complete build. But honestly, depending on what you want to do with it it might be best to wait a bit and save some more cash. |

| 1280768 | 2012-06-09 23:36:00 | Unless you are planning any heavy 3d gaming, get a MB with onboard sound ethernet and video (can you get them without any more?). An Intel graphics chip may be a better bet than ATI/nVidia as they supply open source drivers so you won't be reliant on proprietary support, which can prove problematic for very new or very old hardware. |

For a basic box, maybe a Intel i3 CPU is good enof or even a AMD . 4GB, whatever HD and DVD drive you may have . I would just get a cheap box and the PSU is debatable . I personally would ge a all in one motherboard, builtin video card / sound / network . If you using cable, you don't even need a wifi card . We got a used Dell here, runs on XP Windows, I put in a wifi card, and it does everything I need . Even has builtin speakers inside the box so I don't need speakers . Builtin video card, sound card, network card (1000 base) not that I use cable . 1GB Ram but is fine for the net . . . . . Windows 7 would like to have 4GB and a bit faster CPU . I use my own PC for photoshop stuff, I do have a $250 video card I bought 3yrs ago, the PC, everything is good enof for me still . My regret is that I never play games, so could have gotten a builtin video to save some money . Many people are very happy with a $600 laptop/netbook . It does the job . Depends how pick you are . . . . . |
