| 1258008 | 2012-02-09 23:04:00 | I'm guessing Prefect doesn't automaically count all Maoris as those 'people', just the ones that are constantly making demands. Maybe it's an image problem, I'm fairly new to NZ - 7 years and had a perfectly neutral opinion of Maoris, you know, go to Rotorua and take a photo of them all dancing and sticking out their tongues and what have you. Had no preconceptions but since being here, with few (honestly - very few) exceptions, everything I've seen kind of makes Maoris look like a bunch of people that just want stuff endlessly and not much use at anything else. It's not the White media trying to make them look bad, I've seen Te Karare (sp?) and just about every headline was to do with Iwi making claims or wanting compensation for this, that and the other. Last month on the Maori channel there was a news item praising a little kid of about 5 who noticed a fire in his house and alerted the family. He noticed it because even though it was 1:30am he was up watching TV in the lounge. I have family here, an 18 year old cousin who's doing well at Uni but can't get a scholarship because she's not Maori - that's just wrong. Even on my trip to WINZ between jobs, I seemed to not only be the only White, but the only one who wasn't sacked, the only one who didn't have a suspended license or a criminal conviction. Add that to the fact that they're trying to push Maori language, amongst the most useless things in the world to spend precious learning hours on, as compulsory and it doesn't look good. Maybe I'm sounding racist but I think it's time they stopped wanting and started deserving. Or maybe even one day, start giving. Best post on here for months by a long way. Sometimes outsiders have a better way of looking at it than us Whites who were born here. And if this does not make any sensible person blood boil I dont know what will. www2.careers.govt.nz |

I've been here eleven years and it only took me one to figure most of that out, although I have never been into a WINZ office so didn't know that bit first hand |

Im guilty of being racist, I'm not proud of it but I'm not ashamed either but your post sums up my views largely. It's not racist if it's fact IMO. Your post should be sent to Key |

Which is at odds with their "About Us" statement: Careers New Zealand is the government agency responsible for leading the career development of all New Zealanders. www2.careers.govt.nz |

Just spent a week working with as part of a team to get a major software release stabilised (note we aren't the developers!!). Some very nice comments came back at the end of the week on the performance of the team, their dedication, hard work and technical brilliance. Several of the key team members are Maori (not that race was important to getting the job done) and we had a very multi-cultural team and we all had to work well together. These guys were heroes this week, very deserving, very giving and going well beyond the call of duty, and personally I'm honoured to have spent the week working alongside them. Guess you'll never see them though. |
