1257746 2012-02-07 08:23:00 Ellpow, as an admin, I'm going to have to ask that given all the requests, you either post it, or stop repeatedly suggesting people pm you. You're sounding like a scammer. Sorry. Zara Baxter (16260)
1257747 2012-02-07 08:30:00 Hi Zara

I am not a scammer - I just spent about 10 minutes answering a PM - and the person who PM'ed me has decided not to post the response I gave. I asked twice for PMs - it is not unusual for a blog post for one poster to ask another to PM, and I asked a second time in response to Metla - I won't ask again.

1257749 2012-02-07 11:19:00 So ... who's gonna post it then? fred_fish (15241)
1257750 2012-02-07 16:39:00 I started started "Juicing" mid December and have dropped from 119kg to 109kg.
Basically you are supposed to drink juiced veges and fruit instead of meals.
I lasted a week before it started doing my head in and had to have a normal meal.
Now I have one square meal a day, with juice/water for rest of the day. Its not a diet for everyone, but it suits me and I'm losing about a kilo per week.
Got onto after a mate suggested I watch the Aussie doco "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead".

I was road running and going to the gym 3~4 times a week last year before this, and didn't loose a bean as I didn't change my eating habits.
Now I'm hardly excising at all, but changed my eating habits, and its working for me.

1257751 2012-02-07 17:25:00 Well; I decided last week I need to start doing something.
Am definitely over 130kg now; and the doc has also mentioned my slowly increasing blood pressure
I think I know where I am going wrong with my diet... just gotta find the same willpower that helped me to quit smoking 8 years ago and use it.

The question will be "Are you better off slightly over weight and exercising or a good weight but not exercising."

1257753 2012-02-08 08:53:00 doc told me it is more important to exercise than it is to stop smoking or drinking.... Gobe1 (6290)

That's a good question. In my case I was at that time more than slightly over my ideal weight (by about 35kgs), but exercising. Not sure which the better situation, but even with losing just 10kgs, I noticed I felt better and had a little more energy.
I do move the old carcass about still, as my job can be quite labour intensive and I regularly walk to town, etc instead of taking the car.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable (physician, nutritionist?) might be able to enlighten us as to whether which would be a better state, so to speak.

1257755 2012-02-08 21:46:00 Ellpow is completely right.

You don't need to exercise to lose weight. Hell, you could even eat McDonalds all day and still lose weight (inb4 SuperSizeMe - watch Fat Head [ignore bad information about insulin though])

Not sure what he posted/PM'd, but I am happy to post free advice here.

If you eat in a calorie deficit, you WILL lose weight. Don't fall for the BS diets like Atkins, juice diets etc etc. Honestly, eat whatever food you want, if you're eating in a calorie deficit (eating less than you burn) then you will lose weight. Obviously I don't recommend eating crap all day as you need a wide range of foods to get adequate micronutrients.

Anyway, a formula (nice and easy) you can all use.

Mifflin-St Jeor

MEN: BMR = [9.99 x weight (kg)] + [6.25 x height (cm)] - [4.92 x age (years)] + 5
WOMEN: BMR = [9.99 x weight (kg)] + [6.25 x height (cm)] - [4.92 x age (years)] -161

That will give you you're BMR (Base metabolic rate, basically what you burn to pretty much live)

Now, multiply that by your activity factor (how active you are during the day)

1.2 = Sedentary (Little or no exercise + desk job)
1.3-1.4 = Lightly Active (Little daily activity & light exercise 1-3 days a week)
1.5-1.6 = Moderately Active (Moderately active daily life & Moderate exercise 3-5 days a week)
1.7-1.8 = Very Active (Physically demanding lifestyle & Hard exercise or sports 6-7 days a week)
1.9-2.0 = Extremely Active (Hard daily exercise or sports and physical job)

And then you have your TEE (Total Energy Expenditure)

That number will be how much you will need to eat to MAINTAIN your current weight. To lose weight

Subtract 10-20% calories from the total above and then eat daily at that figure. It is only an estimate so you will need to monitor and adjust, but it will close.

The other thing you should be aware of is getting enough protein and fat in your diet. Believe it or not, fat does not make you fat SHOCK SHOCK.

Requirements are: (these are minimums)

Protein: 1.8 - 2.2g per KG bodyweight
Fat: 1 - 2g per KG bodyweight

Carbs can be just left over (carbs are not the enemy, before someone says they are)

So honestly, eat in a calorie deficit, get enough protein and fat in your diet and you will lose weight. Eat healthy and exercise to live a healthy lifestyle, but otherwise to simply lose weight, just focus on the calories and macros.

Sorry for long post, any questions ask (preferably here instead of PM so others can benefit, but if it's personal you can pm me)

Zara don't delete my post, it ain't spam. (and it took me a while to write out)

edit: I also find that just like ellpow I find most people won't take this advice anyway. People want an "easy and quick" solution. Someone sees a magical diet that will make you lose 10kg in 10 days or something stupid like that and would rather do that. Or they are told they need to stop eating [insert food here] to lose weight etc etc.

Yes, you will lose weight quickly if you drink nothing but juice. You will also be very micro and macro deficient. You will lose quality LBM (muscle) and end up being skinny fat. And as soon as you start eating normally again - guess what, you put it all back on. Not trying to pick on you here Nyuuji, but soon you will be in a documentary - "Skinny, sick and almost dead"

You should aim to lose 1 - 2kg per month. More if you are overweight/obese. Sorry, but there is no magical diet or food to help you. Just the simple law of how our bodies work.
