1280076 2012-06-07 07:56:00 Whoops, missed the part where you said it was a laptop...

Did you try taking the hard drive out and reading it on another machine as suggested?
Does it power on with the hard drive removed? If it does, this would indicate a hard drive problem.

If not, you could try taking the battery out, waiting a few minutes, reset the BIOS too if there's a reset button on the bottom, then try again and see what happens.

You could also try removing other parts (within reason) to try and narrow it down.

For the record, my laptop's touchpad doesn't work sometimes when it's quite cold.

1280077 2012-06-07 08:00:00 A compaq running vista? New laptop I think, provided it is the mobo. Nick G (16709)
1280078 2012-06-12 07:59:00 Just in case anyone is interested

I took it to the "local" guy and watched as he tested it. Th HD was working fine.........final conclusion it was the MOBO - he recommended not shelling out for a new one ($400 ?). We put the HD in it's own "portable" case with USB connection and I came away having paid him $50 (including the case). He "refurbishes" laptops and said he'd refund the $50 if I brought one from him - but he wasn't pushy.

SWMBO is quite happy with the outcome (I'd already backed up her data to two different WD external hard drives before the final crash), and is now deciding if she wants to shell out on something else (basically she only uses it for e-mail, word processing, and a bit of Internet stuff. However, it soon became apperent that the way I've got my lappy set up (with it's own quirky behaviours), is way too much for her :)

So - a couple of question if you've got the time:

1) Was the $50 reasonable?

2) Is it worth getting a new MOBO?

Thanks for all the feedback so far

If you like the machine and you like the price then yes.

1280080 2012-06-12 08:47:00 Is your Power Supply or power connection OK?

I’ve seen a Laptop doing what you describe and the reason was the battery was flat and the Power Supply wasn’t always working.

Another power supply and normal transmission resumed.

Turned out someone had tripped over the cord from the power supply to the laptop and pulled the inner loose in the plug.

Yep - we tried another power supply and that didn't make any difference.

Considering the cases alone for that HDD can be roughly $30+ --- Price, very reasonable, many places charge $90+ just to tell you whats wrong.

Worth A new Board -- Well you have to look at the rest of the laptop, its overall Age, HDD state, the Screen - is is like new, or scratched , the Battery - is it any good - the Keyboard in good condition. Just remember if any other part fails it wont be covered under any of the warranty the motherboard has. From what I have found, many of the replacement boards also only come with a 3 month warranty,so pays to ask how hong it actually is.

Also how much will the labor charge be to rebuild the Laptop ? Hes not going to do it for free I bet.

Hi Wainui

Although the Lappie was bought about 4 yrs ago it hasn't exactly been heavily used (the "sticky" plastic covering on the lid is still there.

He charged me $20 for the casing. The other "local guys" were going to charge $57 just to look at it

We've actually got two batteries for it although one f them is now not really holding it's charge. That's not a problem since the laptop doesn't go anywhere and is operated on mains power.

I'm inclined to get back to him and see what the total cost of putting a new MOBO in is likely to be.

He also swapped the RAM chips out at the time to see if that was the problem.

The "deciding factor" in the original purchase of the laptop was that the keyboard and touch pad "felt nice"! :)
