1257422 2012-02-07 08:17:00 They are planning to introduce fibre equipment to newly built house and are making it mandatory for all buildings.

-The fibre will terminate outside the customer's property due to the expense on wiring the whole house.

Here's what future houses will look like hopefully.

See the ethernet ports? They'll be connected to each room around the house and you'll be pulling cat5 cables from the wall.

1257423 2012-02-07 08:22:00 UFB is being installed in our town. What exactly are the cables? (see the two photos below)

Is everything fibre optic?

On the power pole is a black coil - is this made of the same material as the green cables in the ditch? Will the black coiled cable be extended to all houses that request UFB?

Is copper wire eliminated from UFB?

...and finally... for those NZ PF1ers who already have UFB, what extra costs are involved?

The black copper is fibre cable. Chorus will lay out the cables at your street at no charge I think and they will provide cable to your house for free for so many metres after which you have to pay. I can't remember the exact distance from the street to your house.

There will still be copper inside your house but from the street to the cabinet and to the exchange everything should be fibre

1257424 2012-02-07 23:23:00 It's all empty tubes at the moment. WHEN you sign up, they'll blow a fibre down your tube.

(And no, there won't be a Chorus guy huffing and puffing on the end, it'll be something like this -gmptools.com)

There's a gun which shoots out the fibre.

1257426 2012-02-07 23:54:00 From my ISP's pricing page.

www.ubergroup.co.nz

Uber Group is a local Whangarei ISP.

Wish I could get that, though I'm seriously contemplating getting VDSL2 in the mean time ...
