1280637 2012-06-09 01:14:00 We're switching to naked DSL and were wondering why Xnet charges a lot more than other providers - is it because their service / support is considered vastly superior or something ...? Thanks for your thoughts!

Telstra: 20Gb for $56 per month
Vodafone: 20Gb for $55 per month
Xnet: 5Gb for $65 per month

Pricing Plans:
Telstra - www.telstraclear.co.nz
Vodafone - www.vodafone.co.nz
Xnet - www.xnet.co.nz

1280638 2012-06-09 02:48:00 Xnet got a reputation for terrible service. Because they were selected for some initial FTTH trials, Chorus basically said they had to buck up and sort their issues out. They now no longer oversubscribe their international bandwidth by anywhere near as much as they used to.

Don't go Telstra, service / speed is terrible.
Vodafone are only worth going with if you're on a tight budget and have yourself an OnAccount mobile.

Go with Orcon and their Genius. Of the lot, they've been the best lately (Though by no means perfect), and the Genius router is probably the best ISP-supplied one at the moment. It's also convenient because they preprovision / remotely provision everything for you so you don't have to muck around setting up your router or your VoIP settings.

Xnet add an extra $20 a month for Ndsl if you live somewhere that is deemed to be classed as "rural" according to the Commerce Commission. I left them a couple of years ago and went to Slingshot for that very reason.

1280640 2012-06-09 05:50:00 Yes, the Xnet deal isn't very spectacular is it ... a measly 5Gb for $65 a month.

But I've been having a rummage about and now turned up a couple of better deals ...

Snap are offering 10Gb for $60 a month on a 12 month contract, no sign-up costs.
And nakedplus negotiated a deal that wasn't too far short of Snap, with some extras to sweeten it as well.

But I'll check out Slingshot too, so thanks for that suggestion LL!

1280641 2012-06-09 07:03:00 Anyone know anything about FYX ...? They seem to be quite new - they're not mentioned on the ISPReviews site, but their naked DSL is priced pretty well ...

$55 per month plus 30c per Gb

... though I think we'll probably be going with Snap the way things are looking at the moment!

1280642 2012-06-09 07:07:00 Sorry you got off to a bad start on PF1, hope that you will continue to post on here and maybe offer some contribution as well.

Cheers, LL :D

1280643 2012-06-09 07:46:00 Thank Q! lakewoodlady!

Yes, as a complete noob to this site I had no idea at all that posts with links in them got diverted, so I was completely mystified when this thread still hadn't appeared after more than half-an-hour of waiting! So I assumed the same thing would happen to that other thread, but then it popped up straightaway instead of going to the Admins as I expected!

Oh well - not to worry - it's all sorted out now!

All The Best!

1280645 2012-06-09 13:14:00 Slingshots speed has been abysmal lately, specifically it got real bad in the last month or two of 2011. They're now what Xnet was about 6-7 years ago. Probably the only ones who are worse than TelstraClear, though TelstraClear seem to be taking a fast dive after their massive push lately with their $75 for phone 40GB internet plan.

FYX was going to be something Maxnet (I think) offered that allowed you to stream media from overseas without the use of specialist proxies. They pulled the plug after only a week or two and became a "PAYG" style ISP. Depending on how much you use, it's not actually that cost-effective to be frank. I get the feeling FYX will die a slow death.

For a while I believe Snap were Xnet resellers but I think they're now Telecom Wholesale. I've heard relatively good things about them overall, nothing too overly negative.

1280646 2012-06-09 16:09:00 Thanks for that info Chilling_Silence!

Yes, we've been looking at reviews on ISPReview (and another site whose name I've forgotten - BroadbandNZ or something?), and Telstra was easily the worst of the lot! And FYX doesn't seem to be very well established, so - like you say - they probably won't be around for too long .

Anyway, we ended up signing up to Snap tonight, as they were the best of the bunch and had plenty of nice things said about them, and their $60 for 10Gb seems to be the best deal around and suits us just right too .

And their customer guy was very helpful, he answered all my questions very quickly, and said they'd arrange with Telecom for our landline to be switched off and tell our old ISP that we'd switched over .

Plus another thing we liked about Snap is there's no limit to how many email aliases we can set up, which is very handy if we start getting heaps of spam, as we can just delete our current alias and create a brand new one, so the spam can't find us anymore! We couldn't do that before, and got lumbered with lots of Nigerians offering us heaps of money!

Thanks for the suggestions and ideas everyone!
