21126 2001-10-12 05:27:00 It was designed by Microsoft, as a way to combat piracy. Earlier versions have been found in office 2000, 2002. Windows XP has the latest, where you enter your product number into the windows install, and then hashes it with several codes found in your computer's hardware (hard-drive, processor). The resulting code is then read to microsoft (either by phone or internet), and a code is then sent, for you to 'activate' windows. Without this code, your computer will only function for 60days. Up to four pieces of hardware can be changed before you must get a new code. Guest (0)
