| 21729 | 2001-10-17 06:40:00 | I am a novice home pc user with my first ever pc only a couple of years ago . I am now changing, next week, to a new Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz,526RDRam,80GB,64 mb graphics etc. I have been going to install Win98 and upgrade to ME as hear XP does not support some software - have Dragon Speaking, Office 2000 and loads of games,graphics,photos etc.Your October issue suggests even Win 2000 may be an option. Should I change from ME and if so should I use 2000 or XP? I really would like some expert advice to help this aged novice!!!!Thanks and good luck. |

| 21731 | 2001-10-17 07:33:00 | Hi Keith, As a network manager with over 50 Computers using windows 200 prof.as the operating system without a single crash in more that 500,000 hours operation I could certainly advise its use, Windows XP uses the 2000 engine as the core so one would expect it to be as stable, in addition it comes with a vast array of drivers which would make it quite easy! to install and keep up to date. | 21734 | 2001-10-17 07:42:00 | yea nice machine, I have a p4 1500mhz and its very quick but I decided to stick with 98SE for time being just to ensure all my old software/hardware runs. But you'll get a lot of extra stuff with XP/2000 so its really a personal choice. |

| 21737 | 2001-10-17 08:50:00 | Definitely XP. its very stable, plus most (if not all) new software will be designed for that, and pretty soon you'll not be able to buy software for anything but (same thing happened when Windows 95 first came out). If your old software won't run on it, well it must be REALLY old software. And I'd guess the same software won't run on Win 2000 either anyway. |
