22163 2001-10-21 03:42:00 Hi I've just got 128M of PC133 ram and when I put it into my PC it only recognises 32M of it.I have an Asus i430tx-P5txb motherboard, with a 166MMX,in a PC Direct Discovery 580.The mother board manual says it can take 128M sticks, but it won't see it,no matter which DIMM slot I put it in.Does the nanosecond rating have any effect on this,as at the moment ,in the bios,it is set for 60ns,and the guy I got it from thinks it may be 70ns.Also in the bios there is a settiong for'non os2' or 'os2'.What does this mean.
Hope you can help guys
Peter

22164 2001-10-21 03:59:00 Don't those motherbaords take fastpage ram?

Secondly, can your motherboard really handle that much ram in one slot? some motherboards from that era take that as a total (even if the manual does say 256 :-))

But 133mhz ram? thats almost as fast as the processor!

:-)

22165 2001-10-21 03:59:00 If its only detecting 32mb, you'll probably find that that is the biggest DIMM you can take. 128mb that the manual says will be the TOTAL, so if you fill 4 DIMM slots with 32mb that'll make up the 128. Older boards like yours often couldn't take anything higher than 32mb. Guest (0)
22166 2001-10-21 04:09:00 Hi Peter.

If the ram you bought has got only chips on one side then it will be the new high denisty Ram.

Chances are the Max size your slots will take is 64megs populated on both side ie 32megs per side per slot

Hence the reason you you only get 32megs. If you buy 256megs populated on both sides you will get 64megs readable.

22167 2001-10-21 04:33:00 ASUS boards with the 430TX chipset had model names like TX97-? or TXP4, if you post the model name and the revision number, I can check the manual, and maybe able to help more, but it's most probable as posted above that 128MB sticks may not be supported.
OS2 refers to whether you have IBM OS/2 Warp installed, I doubt whether you have :-), but it was good in its day. You would set the BIOS to non OS2.
Cheers

22168 2001-10-21 04:49:00 60ns & 70ns is old edo ram 72 pin.
your 133 is more like 8-12ns

22169 2001-10-21 04:53:00 Just thinking a bit more here, have you got 2 lots of slots 72 pin & your new 168 pin dimms.
You probably cant have both types of ram in at the same time.

22170 2001-10-21 05:29:00 I have fitted single sided as well as double sided 128MB SDRAM in some TX boards but not in conjunction with 72 pin FP or EDO RAM. More than 128MB seems to slow things down, but it is hardly worth fitting 64MB SDRAM at current price for 128MB.
Earlier VX boards, and some TX boards will not take the new SDRAM.
It is a trial and error business and knowledgeable technical assistance at the time of fitting can be a time saver.

22171 2001-10-21 09:26:00 Hi guys, thanks for all the ideas.Just a few more details. The mobo does take SDRAM,I've got 64M in it now(2 X 32M sticks)and it only has 2 dimm slots. It was one of the first PC's to come out with SDRAM,and the P5TX-B board manual does say it will(supposedly) take 128M in eack DIMM slot, with nothing in the SIMM slots. The RAM I was trying was single sided ram, with a Dick Smith sticker on the back.(I bought it second hand for $20,so I'm not to worried if it doesn't work,I can always sell it to my father)
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Peter

22172 2001-10-22 00:38:00 Hi Peter

Sounds to me like you have
some very high density
ram which your old m\b may not like, most 128m ram sticks are doulble sided
Your m\b looks like it has simm and
dimm slots, you can only use one or the other, not both at the same time.
I would stick to 2 64m ram
modules,for a total of 128m
which should be enough for most apps.
After you fit the ram,you need to go into the bios and config it[usually in chipset features] don,t worry about the edo/fpm settings,if there is an auto setting use that if not set all the sdram settings to the lowest setting
[usually the highest number is the lowest setting]
and try that

good luck
