| 22362 | 2001-10-23 07:00:00 | What is the Windows Temporary Folder? I fully understand what Temporary Internet Files are, which I delete regularly. But what is this other folder? I opened it to discover 60 files in it. I removed most to the recycle bin, but 6 files came up with the 'this file is a program, if you remove it you will no longer be able to run this program or edit some documents, etc' box. I didn't delete those ones as I play save these days. I haven't a clue what most of 60 files were, or how they got there. If they are 'temporary', how come deleting them could cause problems? | Guest (0) | ||

Sometimes Windows uses files for a specific operation and then retains them in a folder designated for temporary files. .For a variety of other reasons as well this folder has many uses for where Temporary files are placed from other programs as well such as word etc. Its really a place windows can use to store the information need to do what you want. Most of the time these files are automatically deleted but sometimes not. These files are safe to delete. Newer versions of windows come with 'Disk Cleanup'. A windows application which search's the computer for temp files no longer needed and deletes them for you. Have a look.. click Start, point to Programs, Accessories,System Tools, and then Disk Cleanup. Jess |

Those programs in the Temporary folder get put there by programs as they are installing themselves, sort of like a holding pen until they are settled in. For peace of mind, just delete the files in the Temp folder to the Recycle bin for a while and see what happens. If after a week no one starts protesting that things no longer work, then they can get the boot. That is actually a safe method to practice when you are not quite sure whether to delete something or not. |
