| 22359 | 2001-10-23 06:05:00 | Recently i asked: hi i have 2 computers which 1 uses win98 and the other win95, and i want to be able to go online at the same time, but dial up at different time. i rang the xtra guys 'n they told me that once 1 computer is connected under the username 'xxx' then as soon as another computer connects using the same username 'xxx' the they start charing $2.50 per hour on top of the plan i'm on. so i'm wondering if there's another FREE isp i could sign up to and just use that isps username when i dial up using my second computer (both using the same ONE phoneline)? so my q is is this possible and if yes, what is some good but free isps available in Auckland (north shore to be specific)? are xfree still going? or i4free? or even freenet with only 10 hours free per month. thanks And you replied: Yes, to do it that way you would need 2 accounts. If you have a network card you can just share the same connection, but it would be rather slow. And so my question now is: thanks, but are you sure that i can with ut a network card be able to connect my second computer on to the internet using a different company's account? and only using ONE line. 'cos you know how when computers are on the internet, and you pick up the phone there's this really weird noise, so can i really connect two computers onto the internet with only one phone line but two accounts, will it mess up the phone line? will xtra or my free internet company which 'm signing up to charge me $x.xx for doing this? If any one else could help then it would be greatly appreciated. |

You see, that funny noise that you hear when the internet is in use in your Computer talking to Xtra. Saying this, there is nothing stoping you setting computers up with internet,(Both on the same xtra account no problem) and use the internet on one when the other pc isn't/ or the line is now free. What you are after if you would like both computers to access the internet at the same time is A) Second Line installed b) Network the Computers together. (This can now be achived many ways either Nic cards, wireless, via the power, yes many ways. Probably best to speak to your local Computer shop on this as the best product for you could be arranged) c)Jetstream/jetstart. With a good router (modem) that can have more than 1 computer plugged into it. Jess |
