| 22337 | 2001-10-23 02:45:00 | Hi guys. I think IDG Communications would make a killing (excuse the phrase) if they published a small magazine (say bi-monthly till popularity gained) of the many questions and answers to computer problems that are posted on this site or from their monthly PC World (or Aussie) magazine. It would be a great read and be a big help to many I?m sure. The ability to read through and get answers without having to boot up a computer would be excellent. It would also make good reference material for any future computer problems that many are bound to encounter. The help section in the NZ PC World magazine is good but could perhaps be more detailed if covered by a dedicated mag. What are your thoughts? Regards Ian - the PC World fan. PS. No guesses for the name of the proposed magazine... Press F1 of course :-) |

It is possible to search through old postings, so you dont even lose them as the become dated.
The only option would be to remove the free forum... in which case where do they plan on getting their questions and answers for this magazine?
PressF1 is such a successful resource precisely because it enables users to get free computing advice from people that normally would be charging exhorbent hourly rates ;-)
|

| 22339 | 2001-10-23 03:45:00 | I personally prefer the current status quo, it is far easier to find things doing a search on here than rummaging through dozens of past copies of magazines for that how-to article/question/answer that you just KNOW you read the other day (but was actually 12-18 months ago). Been there, done that. Best option of all, and I asked Chris Keall to think about doing it a couple of years ago, is put all their Help and How-To articles on a CD-ROM incrementally for issue every 3-6 months. Takes up less space than mags and with a search engine makes it much more user-friendly. |

Yes Susan, your idea of putting Help and How-To articles on a CD-ROM is a very good idea as one CD is a lot easier to carry around than many magazines. The reasoning behind my Press F1 magazine idea came from speaking to others who had difficulty getting access to information when they really needed it (such as when the computer crashed and couldn't access the internet) but also for general reading and computer education. As all of us who have been through any sort of computer crisis knows, a lot can be learned from these sorts of ?problems?, which we would not otherwise have known. Education is the key here. Why would many people pay for their monthly issue of NZ PC World when they could get that information off the Internet? Because reading from a magazine is a lot more enjoyable. In my opinion, there is a need for an 'off-line' alternative (Complementary to NZ PC World). Anyway, food for thought and thanks for your comments :-) |

However, a lot of this stuff is already available on the web here and there, if you know where to look. Personally, I think it would be a good idea, probably better done on CD than magazine format. I guess we just have to do our best with what we have, and see what happens. It could become an annual CD that comes with the magazine, summarising the best stuff for the year. Keep up the good work, all of you. Regards, Robo. |
