| 22246 | 2001-10-22 05:06:00 | I have a 52K modem and run Net Nav 4.7. On my toolbar I have an icon showing two monitors seemingly networked. On placing the mouse over this it indicates bytes sent and received plus a bytes per second rate. It is usually 115200 but sometimes 28800. I have been told this is not download speed but the speed my modem is relaying to my system. Can you advise what it indicates, why does it vary and is it controllable ? |

You can alter whether your modem returns the DTE or handshaking speed by altering your initialisation string. The process for doing this will depend on your software (which you did not tell us). I can't think of any valid reason why it would alternate between the two if you are using the same software and the same modem to dial up each time. But it shouldn't concern you because it won't affect the performance of your connection. This information is really only useful for diagnostic purposes. |
