22661 2001-10-26 07:32:00 I have a Celeron 430 PC running 98SE with 96 meg ram.I bought this computer
second hand to chat live with my familly overseas.

Originally it had Windows ME. When I was on the internet it would freeze
iritreivable--the only way to get back was to reboot. I then installed
windows 2000 as a dual boot. The freezing problem persisted and in addition
it was inclined to suddenly reboot for no apparent reason--always when
online.

It was suggested to me that it had insufficient ram to run either of these
OS's.

So---I formatted the Hd and installed Windows 98SE. Thrashed around got
everything working again. But same two problems still persist---when I am
just getting nice video of grandaughter from Aus the bloody thing will
reboot on me or freeze. This only seems to happen 'on line'.

The only other app installed is 'cam manager' but this is not the problem .

(Wits end. Large tree outside back door. PC. Tree. Smash, smash. $$$$$$$)

Please has somebody got a suggestion.

22662 2001-10-26 08:14:00 Try getting the latest drivers for you modem, preferably from the chipset maker (eg Connexant/Rockewll, Lucent).

But since it occured across multiple OSs then its probably hardware related.

My guess would be either faulty RAM or power supply.

Luckily RAM is currently very cheap (128MB for about $50), for live video you will want 128mb total atleast anyway.

The reboots can be caused by a faulty/underpowered powersupply.

22663 2001-10-26 10:17:00 A few wrong Cmos settings can cause a lot of headaches to.
Perhaps the last owner has mucked around in the cmos. Try and download the manual and set things to default, or you may have the option to do so while you are in the different pages in the cmos. With the manual you could probably work out if the computer has been overclocked by checking the various jumper settings.

22664 2001-10-26 10:22:00 ...my specifications are similar and also running Win98SE. You might find the following of some interest with regards 'freezing' when on-line:

In the later part or 2000 I also spent a considerable amount of time and effort trouble shooting a problem that would read very much like your own posting. Most frustrating - and indeed a 'headache' to quote KO.

I finally solved the problem, and quite by accident.

It was caused by the connection to my ISP - although, as one might expect, they denied this possibility at first.

To resolve it, I used one of the alternative telephone numbers available to the ISP's customers: changing from my city's connection number to the National connection number.

Although not very scientific or technical, I was able to satisfy myself (and the ISP) that their number *was* the problem [in my case].

I did this by repeating the 'freezes' in a controlled manner: that is, connect using my city's number and freeze within minutes - connect using the National number and many months of faultless Web use has followed.

Should you wish to experiment with this, first obtain a list of the alternative connection numbers off your ISP's Web Site. Then go: Control Panel > Internet Option > Connections > Settings > Properties.

On the 'General Tab' change the number listed to one of your ISP's alternatives (simply delete the existing number and type in your option) then click Apply/Okay > Okay > Okay.

You will be able to satisfy yourself in very short-order if your connection number is the problem.

Best wishes at finding a solution.

Cheers !!!

22665 2001-10-26 18:46:00 Also check that you don't have a clash with your IRQ's, the modem could be an older model where the com port and IRQ had to be set manually with jumpers.
If they are wrong that would cause your symtoms.
