22605 2001-10-25 10:51:00 does any one know if there is such a thing as a radio tuner that can be downloaded that would give the whole frequency range like the old short wave radios did. i'm not interested in the commercial radio that most net tuners cater to.
thanks in advance, old one.

22606 2001-10-25 12:14:00 what exactly are you trying to do??

a couple of points- radio stations on the net don't have frequencies like normal radios.
if you are thinking of normal tv/radio capture card then the limitation with those is the actual hardware. there is no software fix for them.

22607 2001-10-25 23:02:00 There have been some actual receivers in the form of PCI cards that you can plug into your computer and then use software for tuning.
Another one was the ICOM IC-PCR 1000 which is a black box receiver connecting to a serial port via an RS232 cable, frequency range 10KHz to 1300 MHz, pretty wide.
The software gives 3 virtual front panel receiver displays.
In 1998 the quoted price was A$899.
There was a write up in April 1998 Elecronics Australia.

22608 2001-10-26 05:56:00 Hi

I have a Winradio WR1500E (external) communications receiver that runs through my PC. It puts up a full communications receiver control panel on screen with rotating tuning knob & all. Continuous coverage is 150KHz to 1.5GHz in AM/CW/SSB/FM-N & FM-W as appropriate to the band in use. It even has a spectrum analyzer built in, works great and is also available as an internal card. It costs around A$900 but the performance is right up there with the best. Have a look at www.winradio.com.
