22595 2001-10-25 18:32:00 Ihave a HP 840c deskjet printer connected via a USb cable to KTX celeron 500, Windows 98SE. I choose USB to keep the parallel cable free to use Fast Lynx to transfer files between my laptop and the KTX PC on a regular basis.

Before ever I turn on the printer I have to pull the USB cable from the printer, turn it on and then plug the USB cable back other wise Windows says the printer is and unknown USB device and the printer will not print.

After the daily mess around above Windows detects the printer correctly and it works fine.

I would like to remove this daily chore.

22596 2001-10-25 20:24:00 Did you use the CD that came with the printer to install drivers, or did you use the Windows ones? I'd suggest deleting the printer (Start > Control Panel > Printers, then delete the printer). Before you do that, get into Windows using that 'daily chore' and then delete the printer.

Once its deleted, Use the CD to install the drivers again, following all the instructions, and hopefully this will solve the problems...

22597 2001-10-26 00:28:00 I would like to add the suggestion that you may need to boot your computer in safe mode in order to remove the drivers (I did with my Windows XP installation) and don't forget to check the internet for later drivers. Guest (0)
22598 2001-10-26 02:29:00 What we are going to do is properly unistall the current usb drivers, reoinstall and everything should work as desired..

1) From add/remove programs uninstall the hp deskjet software/drivers

2)Follow the instructions for uninstalling the usb side of things

www.hp.com

When it comes to reinstalling..

1)Boot back up into win98se. Insert the Hp drivers cd.
2)Insert the USB plug from printer to PC.
3)Printer should now be reconised. Choose to search for the best driver.
4) Specift the location as your x:\win98usb folder (where x is your cdrom drive).
5) Process through the rest of the steps as you have many times, but this time it should stick.
