23119 2001-10-30 13:59:00 Sometimes, I get brassed of with my Internet Explorer (I have version 6) and thought I might like to try a different one... I am worried that if I
download a second browser for evaluation purposes - it will clash with my IE6.... What I would like to know is:
A: Is there any point in running two different browsers, and will they clash with each other?
B: Can someone recommend a superior one to IE6 (and why it's superior)

Many Thanks, ALAN

23120 2001-10-30 18:41:00 No, they won't clash, in fact I have had more than one type running quite happily at the same time. They will all look to see whether they are the default browser and ask you if they're not.

I have used Opera in the past (www.opera.com). It's a good solid browser, smaller in resources than the other two biggies, and seems to download faster. It's also free.

23121 2001-10-30 20:36:00 You won't have a problem with browsers clashing - you can have them both running at the same time if you want to... I have two - Netscape 6.1 and IE6 - to check that webpages will display properly on both browsers.
But that's the main problem with using other browsers... Most websites out there run best on Internet Explorer, and some just don't display at all on other browsers, so this is something else to consider.
I've never heard of a browser being superior to IE6, mainly because IE will put up with problems on sites to make them still display, and makes use of Microsoft type functions that other browsers do not.
Personally I've never had any problems with IE6 or Netscape 6.1, although I prefer IE6 as it seems to download pages faster.

23122 2001-10-31 03:33:00 I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has used Arachnid (free, from http://browser.arachnid.cz). I have it on a laptop for browsing various documentation files. The download fits on one floppy, and expands up to about 3M. For users with lots of memory (as much as 4M!) they recommend using part of it as a ram disk ... It might motor on a fast machine.
