23040 2001-10-30 03:01:00 Has any Linux expert used Winlinux 2001? What is your verdict? It seems too good to be true - no dual booting, just a double click from Windows. What is the catch? Guest (0)
23041 2001-10-30 07:50:00 I've used zipslack and dragon linux which are similar.

While technically you don't need to dual boot as linux is on your windows partition. When you run it it will shutdown to DOS mode and run a program called LOADLIN which loads linux over the top of DOS.

But since LOADLIN can be used on a proper linux install you don't gain much.

The problem with running linux on a DOS partition is its slow (because the DOS file system is slow).

Also unless it uses some sort of disk images (which make it even slower) then it will create thousands of files (>16000), which is fine on the more advanced file systems used by linux, but that many files on a DOS partiton slows everything down (add about 40 mins to a scandisk).

If you want a copy of linux just to play with, then consider DemoLinux, it runs entirely off the CD, although you can set it to save your home directory to your windows partition so your settings are kept.

23042 2001-10-30 20:26:00 Many thanks for the information b m. I have just installed Mandrake 8.0 and I find the sheer size of it rather daunting - especially for an oldie who first put a finger on a keyboard 18 months ago. I will persevere. Guest (0)
