23123 2001-10-30 12:41:00 I gonna buy a new mainboard. There are 2 mainboard, one have 1*AMR and the other doesnot.
Could anyone tell me what is AMR and what it use for ? Should I pay an extra 30bucks for that ?
Thanks

23124 2001-10-30 14:07:00 amr is audio modem riser, basicly useless. would prefer an isa slot, it maybe old tech but at least its usefull.

what baords are you looking at buying? as i wouldn't choose one or the other because it has an amr slot or not. there are more important things to concider.

23125 2001-10-30 20:15:00 things to consider. are you going to be using your computer other than a typewriter? if so then do not get integrated video, or have an agp slot as well, the more integrated things that are on the MB the more problems you are likely to have in the long run. Guest (0)
23126 2001-10-30 23:33:00 Having recently upgraded my motherboard, and had to go through 3 before actually getting what I wanted, here are the points I got caught out on:

1) Know how much RAM you are likely to want, and then make sure you have enough slots, mobo's come with 2-4 slots usually.

2) If you intend on doing any graphic intensive work, ensure it has an AGP port, preferably 4x, not all mobo's have them.

3) Work out what addon slots you need, not all mobo's come with an ISA, and usually you can get 3-6 PCI slots, make sure you have room for upgrades.

4) Work out what processor you want to have in it and make sure the mobo can handle it, not just the CPU socket, but also bus speed, my 866MHz processor only ran at 650MHz in the first motherboard because the bus speed was only 100MHz and wouldnt run a processor faster than 650.

5) Dont bother worrying about the AMR slot, for all of 'AMR is a new industry standard running AC'97 audio codec' I have yet to see any cards requiring an AMR slot.

6) Onboard graphics or sound are BAD BAD BAD, if you can possibly avoid it - a) dont use them, and b) dont even HAVE them, if you have them sometimes they can be a right bastard to disable.
