1282391 2012-06-18 07:33:00 Just wondering if 32 Bit apps are compatible with a 64 Bit OS. I will have to move to 64 Bit in the future and I can't be stuffed re-downloading all my apps in 64 Bit mode. Thanks guys. :) ChazTheGeek (16619)
1282392 2012-06-18 07:36:00 For the most part, yes. Drivers and things are not. 16-bit apps are not. Chilling_Silence (9)
1282393 2012-06-18 07:39:00 Ok thanks. So I would have to re-download all my drivers. That's not to hard I guess. I don't think I use any 16-bit apps anyway. ChazTheGeek (16619)
1282394 2012-06-18 07:39:00 Software in the 32x will work on a 64x platform as it [the 64x OS] will emulate the 32x platform. HOWEVER there will be no performance improvement for the aforementioned softwares running as emulated 32x. Also drivers designed for 32x will NOT work on a 64x platform.

Personally, I would work my way through the 32x software, re downloading it as 64x when updates are avaliable.

32x what?

It's usually referred to as x64, not 64x ;)

On top of that, not all 64-bit OS's emulate 32-bit applications. Specifically I've built from source pure Linux builds that are *only* 64-bit with no 32-bit backwards compatibility. In fact, I think I probably did that close to 10 years ago now...

What would we do without chill to sort out all my terrible and useless advie

Thanks

1282398 2012-06-18 22:57:00 I understood what you meant. ChazTheGeek (16619)
1282399 2012-06-18 22:58:00 Some software is simply not compatable with new OS's :eg Win7 etc etc
That may be more of an issue
Many companies just never upgraded their apps , or apps are so old that the original software developers are: out of business/sold off/refuse to support old versions (or cant)
