1282109 2012-06-16 21:10:00 Am looking for a power supply to run an AMD x3 Athlon II based system. Will primarily be for video encoding and VM's

Will only be one optical drive, one HD, maybe a graphics card at a later date. What sort of wattage would you recommend? (my initial thoughts are in the 500-550W range - too much or too little?)
Have had a long run with Enermax; are these PSU's still recommended? If not, what is?

Definitely in the market for something under $200. Nothing over

1282110 2012-06-16 21:26:00 Corsair, Antec or Enermax. Don't be cheap on PSUs, they are too important. pctek (84)
1282111 2012-06-17 01:22:00 Was checking out a PSU requirement calculator which came back to me that I would need at least 550W (taking into account a future Grafix Card, extra HD's and some USB addons)
With that in mind, hows this: www.ascent.co.nz

1282112 2012-06-17 01:47:00 www.computerlounge.co.nz Corsair HX650 $198. Or if you can find it anywhere you can get a GS600 600w PSU for $150 but it's non-modular. icow (15313)
1282113 2012-06-17 04:02:00 +1 for both recommendations above. Either or... pctek (84)
1282114 2012-06-18 06:50:00 Don't get one of the cheap enermax's (Tomahawk I think), they aren't that good and can have issues. Their older PSUs and midrange-high end stuff is great though. Anything corsair is generally good (personally I'd avoid their lowest end range) forrest44 (754)
1282115 2012-06-18 06:53:00 Video cards don't really use more than 200W max (unless you get a top of the range one). Add that to a 200W system and you probably won't see north of 400W. Unless you're overclocking - that will really add to the power consumption, sometimes in the order of 100's of watts if you're going for a decent overclock. But with minimal price difference of 500W+ units I'd probably just go with one of them forrest44 (754)
1282116 2012-07-14 08:50:00 After some reading, I have decided I will opt for the HX650 Corsair... a bit more than what I wanted to pay; but oh well... Myth (110)
1282117 2012-07-14 09:55:00 hey man you will not be dissappointed by a corsair power supply. There are none better but there are ones that are as good but the same price. Slankydudl (16687)
