1281355 2012-06-13 00:45:00 Hi Team

My old DSE ATA to USB enclosure has died and I still have a number of ATA discs that I need to access from time to time.

Is it still possible to buy such an adapter these days, and if so, where would one find it? As an alternative, if anybody has one they'd like to sell I'd be interested.

Cheers

I've taken a look at Ascent's website and I like that unit, but it appears that you have to provide the supply voltage separately. Is that right? If so it is not a problem as the DSE unit still provides the necessary power, it is only the ATA interface electronics that gave up the ghost.

Power supply comes with it. I like this unit because not only does it do the job the whole thing is small and is easy to store when not required.

Something inside tells me that $6 +freight = crap product.

The pre-GST proce is $5.22, so even allowing a simple 30% profit margin the cost price including freight is $3.65. Throw in the manufacturer's margin and freight costs per unit and there is about $1.50 worth of quality there, more or less.

Too many products like that are simply not worth the trouble. I bought from Bunnings an aluminium cased LED torch complete with the best Chinese batteries a Kiwi Dollar can buy, guaranteed to last until you get past the checkout, and you might even get outside the door if you are lucky. Cost was about $5, but after a couple of switch-on cycles half the leds were out. If you banged it hard enough some would come back on, so I took it apart and only half the LEDs were soldered in. I resoldered all of the LEDs, put new batteries in and it is working ok, but the switch will probably be the next to go.

IMHO cheap prices and good quality are mutually exclusive.
