1281944 2012-06-16 10:12:00 Is that because you set it like that? If so that's your problem, conflicting IP's. If it is being automatically assigned that IP you have a DHCP problem which means that the "bad" PC is not getting an IP from the routers DHCP server.

If you set it like that allow the PC to Automatically assign an IP from DHCP, if It is getting that IP automatically then try setting another one (eg 192.168.1.123) Depending if this works or not you should investigate as to why DHCP is not assigning a correct IP to that PC.

1281945 2012-06-16 10:47:00 When you say I should investigate why DHCP etc ... That is why I am asking here:)
Of many dozen computers I have installed XP on in the last 4 months (Always using the original XP install CD and same cable from the same Netcom router) this is the only one that has not automatically configured itself when I ran network set up.
IP settings and DHCP are not something I am familiar with so it could very well be my fault as you say but it still means that at the moment I have one PC that cannot access the internet and have no idea on how to remedy this?
I would very much appreciate anyones guidance and patience thank you.

1281948 2012-06-16 11:05:00 On the properties of the network card under IPver4, is it set to static or automatic? johnd (85)
1281949 2012-06-16 11:14:00 If you are talking about properties in Local Area conection, there is no IPver4 or IPver6. Only the top 4 items? minster (9180)
1281950 2012-06-16 11:27:00 So since the other computers work fine we can fairly deduce that the problem is with the client (bad PC)

Go into the network adapter properties, there should be a list of network functions there (as johnd said) you may have to scroll down in the window to see them all. Find the one called "internet protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" Double click on it to bring up the options for IPv4... if you set the DNS manually this is the same place where you do that. Make sure everything in that area is set to Automatic

1281952 2012-06-16 12:12:00 Opening properties on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and setting everything there to automatic just takes me back to my original problem of not being able to connect to the internet? minster (9180)
1281953 2012-06-16 13:17:00 Don't set your ip address to be the same as the gateway, that will cause all sorts of confusion on your network. OK so what do you get now if you go start>run>cmd>enter>ipconfg /all Alex B (15479)
