1281313 2012-06-12 23:07:00 I had a look at the Consumer reviews and the Nikon Coolpix L120 (www.priceme.co.nz)is recommended by consumer but is a little bit over your budget. I recently bought one from Noel Leeming for $349, the camera works ok for me. Bobh (5192)
1281314 2012-06-13 00:33:00 I'm not much of a photographer but I got a Fuji camera for around $200 with 14MP and 10X Zoom that I really like. Was mainly attracted to the zoom which is hard to get at that price. I do wish it had AA batteries though, the Li-ion battery and charger is not very convenient. I wanted compact and cheap though so that's what I was shopping for. JB HiFi have a good selection if there's one in your area. dugimodo (138)

Which of the cheaper megazoom (10x) can do 1/2 descent close up photos ie less than 1m away (photos of bits for trademe)
Ive a CANON PowerShot , & the 'macro' mode is useless.

but anyway...
I would recommend getting a camera that uses AA batts, just in case batts are flat when you need to use it , unexpectedly .
Also get a camera that uses the more common memory cards : not some expensive (say) Sony stick etc etc
A good video mode is another thing to check for.

Cheers

1281317 2012-06-13 06:14:00 Add a vote for Canon from me too.

They seem the least.. weird. My old Powershot A400 is great. Uses standard AA cells for power (I use NiMH), A standard SD Card, and a standard CR1220 button cell for the time. All user-replaceable too.

And their EXIF data has a lot more features than anyone else's, I believe, if that's your thing.

1281318 2012-06-13 06:42:00 Here's the conclusion of one review I read for the canon sx150

So it seems I'll have to shell out a bit more for this (www.dicksmith.co.nz) or something similar....

1281319 2012-06-13 07:02:00 still a lot of plus points though. I would agree with the battery life being short. Nick G (16709)
1281320 2012-06-13 10:18:00 Well I must have bought the "dud" one then !!!. Canon PowerShot A590 IS model.

Uses batteries as if they were going out of production.

Bought August 2008 and taken back 3 times due to this battery problem, but given different batteries to try, they then gave different charges at discounted prices, still no good.

Asked for a exchange under the CGA, but as it was an exclusive 1 day offer to Members/Staff ( cost price +10% ) it was not covered.

Enelope baterries seem to be the best and when not taking photos, then take them out.

Will take 16gb card.

Lurking.

Yep, the batteries were a problem that is why I said chuck in eneloop batteries. I remember starting a thread years ago about the camera battery life and it was the late Godfather that put me onto (Sanyo) eneloop. Still using the originals I bought back then but they have been charged once or twice.;)

Another thing that I can't see mentioned is get a Camera (whatever breed) with a viewfinder. Those screens, regardless of make, are useless in bright sunlight.

1281321 2012-06-13 10:51:00 Maybe outside your budget but the Canon S90 is good. Someone I know, printed a A1 print off this point and shoot camera and it was at sunset time when the light was dark. It's hanged up at his dental practice's waiting area. Nomad (952)

Yep - I'd been wondering about a view finder.
