1258855 2012-02-14 00:06:00 She is also a high school student and in this day a laptop or similar is essential to doing well in school.

They are not a essential for doing well in school. No wonder half the students can't write because they have been using laptops and not writing it with pen and paper. What happens if they get some job that requires them to use pen and paper? They ain't going to be able to write **** because they have been using laptops or what at school.

1258856 2012-02-14 00:33:00 Thats ridiculous

Technology is very necessary, we are no longer living in the dark ages.
Most teachers insist on typed assignments and where possible homework, writing will eventually become obsolete, and yes it has already started.

My son is 5 years old and already has a laptop and a net-book, he needs to get up to speed with technology as soon as he can in order to do the best he can and get the best start.

Sadly true. We're going back to England and it's already the norm for even young kids to do it all on a PC. Even a crappy Primary School that has no budget still has a full IT suite, Americanised spelling is creeping up and it's no longer about learning, just knowing where to find it if you need to.
Being pragmatic, I guess it makes sense but it still sits a bit uneasy with me. Saying that, I was at Secondary School when they suddenly allowed calculators in class and in exams, and old fashioned sods (like I am now) thought it would be terrible. People's Mathematic skills did duly take a dive, no doubt, but it was of no real consequence in a world where a calculator would always be at hand. Maybe it's the same now for Computers.

Personally, I'd go back to the days of no PC and no Internet like a shot, if everyone else would too. I think a world full of PCs is worse than a world with none. But I can't, because we've all made it more or less vital. It's a shame.
Even the web's saucier side, of which I am an occasional fan, seems wrong. Yes, there are many fine and pretty things to see, but it was kind of more fun discovering an ancient magazine in the woods as a young'un and building a den just to keep it safe and reinforce your position as 'the man'.

1258858 2012-02-14 02:55:00 S H I T E, back to England !!!

Not bad grouping with those shots to the lappy.

Still think we learnt more with the "leather bound" ledgers and journals.

Going back to the dark ages !, with all killing, boozing, s h a g g i n g, drugs, etc, etc, we haven't learnt much in this life style, brains have too much spare time with all the modern machinery.

Lurking.

WTF???? At five i had a 486 with 16mb of ram and windows 95, and that wasn't for school, that was for me and my sister to improve our computer skills and play on in our own spare time. At school, i had to write with a pen and paper. Everyone at the School I used to go to always wrote with pen and paper, and only ocasioally was anything typed on their crappy computers.

Technology is NOT necessary.

No offense, but you are spoiling your child rotten. A 5 year old should not have a laptop and a netbook. Later on in life, he is gonna think he can just ask and instantly recieve. For most of my computing and technology stuff, i've had to save and pay for the stuff myself.

From your post, it seems like you just handed your child a laptop and Netbook. Why does a 5 year old need them? They all use pen and paper to learn how to read and write. Laptop's in schools is just making people dumber.

Unfortunately I disagree and not because I like computers. I have a nephew who is deaf, but he is incredibly bright. My brother in law wouldn't buy him a computer and boy did that impact on his education. Everything we do now involves a computer in some way, even being a cashier in a supermarket the tills are basically simple tablets.

If you don't let your kids have access to technology your really setting them up for a life on the DPB

1258862 2012-02-14 03:39:00 He did not ask for the equipment and as I see it, it is just as important for me to help him with his tech as it is for me to help him read and write.
I buy him pens and paper for writing and whatever why shouldn't I buy him the technology he needs to learn on as well.

But why am I explaining this to a child, come back in a decade when you have kids of your own......

That makes more sense. Your other post came across like you were just spoiling your son. It's nice to know writing etc.. is just as important

:annoyed:

I may come across as a dick in some of my posts, but i am just as intellegent as many others here, i just need to be less opinionated, and need to learn to write more apropriatly to bring my points across in a none dickhead way. I just need to show it more. Many of my bad posts were posted when i was very down and depressed. I am a far better person than many of my posts make me out to be.

For all members here. From now, i wish to start a clean slate. Just forget all the crap that has come out of my keyboard.
