| 1258300 | 2012-02-09 22:07:00 | That's an average of around $1500 per person, not a huge amount, so was probably wisely spent. | Arnie (6624) | ||
| 1258301 | 2012-02-09 22:15:00 | robsonde, thanks for bringing that up, we had almost forgotten what we took the money for. Power was out for 13 days I think, so wtf would you do?. No fridge No freezers' No stove No microwave No lights No hot water No toilet No fresh water Do you think we bludged on friends and neighbours generosity, for free. Red Cross funding was mainly for loss of power supply, but there was also no restrictions on who could claim the money, so westies may have been in on the act as well. robsonde, thanks for you donation and to all those other folk who saw fit to donate, every little bit helped in those dark days. Lurking. Ps. I only hope there might be an Audit on Red Cross and EQC payouts, especially EQC contents claims, we know of a lot of TVs' that were pushed and not shunted by the quakes and repalced with "flat screens". lurks. |

| 1258302 | 2012-02-09 22:16:00 | personally I gave some $$ to the Red Cross Chch fund . I am trust that they did the best as they saw fit at the time . was it the best possible way to spend the $$ ? , maybe not . but in an emergence like Chch, I would rather see a good solution right now than have a bunch of managers spend 3 years deciding what is the best answer (and taking a 20% cut for the job) . I agree with both robsonde's posts . : To go further, there's not going to be much grunt to your essay if you just ask the questions you have, with the responses given . For example you could explore: The Red Cross raised $115m, but so far have given only $67m out . * how much of the funds are spent on RC administration? * where is the balance of $58m? * is it on deposit and interest bearing? * if not, why not? * if so, at what rate? * what is the intention of the RC regarding distributing the $58m? * the money was given in good faith to benefit Christchurch, will this objective still be met, or the funds distributed to other causes without reference to the people of Christchurch? If as the article states major items were for winter heating, * was Christchurch also the victim of a once-in-a-lifetime cold snap, meaning the populace was unprepared, with or without earthquakes and thus caught with unbudgeted expenses? Or was it business as usual? There's a lot more you could achieve for your essay by asking open questions such as these . Good luck . BTW I also contributed, but through the City Mission . |

Oh god. I care not what the recipients of the Red Cross money do with it. Nor do I care if loads of people had old TVs, lost them and replaced them with LCD's either. What do you expect??!! CRT is dead. People who came to my shop and had insurance claims for their PCS got the equivalent modern thing instead. I sure didn't go get them some piece of crap off Trademe. So some people who were too poor to have a modern TV got one after the earthquake, so what, so they go something a bit nice out of the experience then. God you're all spiteful. Go round their houses, inspect the cupboards, see what they do all day - see if they are "deserving" or not. Obviously if they were unemployed or something, then they should just have got a smack in the head instead... |

We only hope there is is something left to pay for our house repairs, that's all. As a matter of fact, we have all been requested by EQC to make all of the damaged goods available for inspection by EQC. Apparently photos were not good enough. But with over 380,000 claims they may have relented. B u g g e r, we should have bowled all our tvs' over too, 2 did fly across the main bedroom, 1 onto the bed (that was cosy) the other on a tallboy flew 12 feet into the opposite wall, twice Feb/June and we would recommend this brand as it still works. There have been fires break out in fallen tvs', so we bought (our money) a flat screen to replace the crt that took the double tumble. pctech we only hope you and other taxpayers' in NZ don't have to pick-up the additional taxes required to fully compensate the additional cost not covered by EQC. We have been overpaid by EQC and do you think they can see their errors', will be trying one more time to convince them, (whoops another after-shock) then stuff them we will keep the overpayment. Red Cross grant and EQC payments are two different things aren't they. I kept my CRT, no need to change it - until it crapped out. Then I bought the cheapest decent brand LCD I could find. I'll keep that till it's dead too probably. |

| 1258307 | 2012-02-10 04:11:00 | Yes they are, Red Cross a charity have made two sets of payments, $1.000.00 first and $500.00 recently I think. Daughter talked us into the first, hope she doesn't pick up on the second. EQC are Buildings $100,000.00 plus GST and Contents $20,000.00 plus GST, less any excess of course, think ours is $200.00 on each. Bought a 19 inch Veon to replace the Mit. 14 inch crt. |

| 1258309 | 2012-02-10 05:30:00 | The average per beneficiary was small, so I'm not too fussed about how the money was spent. Suffice to say, there were plenty of people with some serious needs, and I don't begrudge them $1000-$1500 to assist them a bit. It sure won't go far towards all their issues. Heck, the psychological trauma alone is worth that much and more. If it were possible to 'buy' ones way out of any involvement in the ordeal, then most would be very happy to cough up a few grand to be spared the years of lost sleep, shaking and disruption to home and work. Many would spend that much just to avoid using a portaloo for a month. |
