1466287 2020-01-29 03:12:00 I have fiber connected, modem & my 5 month old HP puter and was thinking about a power backup.
On Trade Me I spotted a 400 watt inverter, with power sockets and connectors for a 12 volt battery.
Would that be enough to supply my setup?
Also can you attach a charger to the battery while its running?
:thanks
Ian

A power inverter, or inverter, is a power electronic device or circuitry that changes direct current to alternating current.

Think you are wanting for a power backup in case of a power cut whats called a UPS.

There are many of them, all varying in price, and depending on the number of devices attached will depend on how long they run on the battery.

This is the specs I was looking at:-
Specifications:
Model: SP4000
Name: Car power inverter 4000W
Input voltage: DC 10.5V~15V
(When the battery voltage is lower than 10.5V, the inverter is low voltage protection, when the battery voltage is higher than 15V, the
inverter high voltage protection)
Output voltage : AC 110V /220V for your choice
Output frequency is: 50Hz for 220V model /60Hz for 110V model
Type: DC 12V to AC110V, DC 12V to AC 220V
Peak Power: 4000W
Rated power: 300W
Output waveform: Modified sine wave
Product Size: 13.5*11.2*5.5cm
Package Size: 6.4x4.4x 2.2 inch
Weight: 0.6 kg

1466290 2020-01-29 06:20:00 As Wainui said in his post what you want is a UPS not an inverter. An inverter is used to convert power from a DC supply to AC to run say a fridge when camping. An Inverter is plugged in between a 12volt supply and whatever you wish to run where as a UPS contains one or more batteries and remains plugged in between your AC supply and gear and instantly takes over if AC power is cut.
I have a UPS supplying power to the Fibre box, my network router, switch and wireless AP. That keeps my Internet Connection up and running during any power cut. If I had a land line it would handle that as well.

I tried to look for a UPS on Trade Me & got dolls & all sorts.....

1466292 2020-01-29 07:55:00 Have a look at PB Tech or one of the other PC suppliers and look for a UPS there. There are plenty to choose from and I would not purchase a second hand one in any event. CliveM (6007)
1466293 2020-01-29 08:25:00 Another thing to add is that UPS units are designed to supply enough power so that your equipment can be powered down safely or until backup power kicks in such as a generator. That is it is designed to prevent equipment from being damaged when the power is cut unexpectedly. A UPS is not intended to actually power devices for an extended period of time.

You can get UPS units which will provide up 30 minutes of power via their battery but those can be quite pricey, upwards of $1000 depending on what you're buying.

I just went to PBTech and this is one of their current banner ads Poweroak EB50 400Wh Portable Power Station (www.pbtech.co.nz)

Could be just what you need as long as you have enough sunshine where you are to provide additional charging or just rev up your car to get it charged up.

1466294 2020-01-29 09:59:00 If you were to use an inverter you want a pure sine wave model not a modified sine wave one like you listed. They are not good for electronics and may damage your pc.

But if you hook up a charger to a battery to an inverter what you've done is built a crude UPS. And you'd need a bit of knowledge to set it all up properly, get the right kind of charger, battery, and inverter etc.
Yes it could work but it's not a great solution, get a proper UPS as suggested.

On the other hand to go totally over the top, get some solar panels, an MPPT charge controller, some deep cycle batteries, and a pure sine wave inverter, and run it all from the sun :)

1466296 2020-01-29 19:08:00 With UPS's there are many sorts ( amount of backup power time, functions etc) just depends on what you are able to spend or require.

One thing I look at is do they have any sort of equipment guarantee, for example the "$25K Connected equipment claim policy" like this one at PBTech (I Dont buy from them I have my own suppliers) www.pbtech.co.nz or www.pbtech.co.nz

Got one customer who accidentally tried it out ( different brand) and they paid out -- Bit of a story but wont tell it now unless someone wants to know.
