1466063 2020-01-26 10:10:00 Yea that's a good choice.

Kier was lead developer with vBulletin since the beginning - until InternetBrands bought it 10 years or so ago and screwed Kier over big time - then tried to sue him for releasing Xenforo!

I've done a couple of test installs with it a long time ago to check it out - it's very similar to vBulletin in a lot of ways (naturaly)

I still use a 3.8 vB version on a private forum that's been running since 2002, and have a spare lifetime license on a 4.xx version that was never used (same as this forum) - IB charged $240 U.S for that as a "special" deal at the time from memory - ripp-off artists !

The thing with forums, is you need to have a good reason for users to come back pretty regularly, or it becomes a ghost town very quickly.

Don't expect to just "set up a forum, and the people will come"

just my two cents

Yes, I know what you mean.
Everyone is on social media these days.
And many people use mobiles which are not so good for forums.

BUT I think I have a very good reason to keep them coming back.

1466069 2020-01-31 19:16:00 Hello
80 views and no replies.
I just went on to Freelancer and posted my request there.
Within 3 minutes I must have got about 12 offers to help!

I have used Freelancer before, but I forgot all about it.
Isn't the internet great.

You could look into GoDaddy and use it for both domain name registrar and web host. They have worked pretty well for me.
As for the site, i m not sure about its content, purpose/audience but WordPress and Drupal comes to mind for content management.

WordPress is pretty easy use for CM. Drupal has so much flexibility and is a beast...might be overkill for your intended purpose though. And there is a learning curve with Drupal.

Thanks for that, but I've finally got a webhost, and some Forum software.
Its all up and running.
Now I just need to get some members and learn HTML5 and CSS Grid.
I don't like WordPress (too much spam), So I'm coding my own site.

1466072 2020-02-11 04:22:00 I can't claim to be sufficiently interested to have read everything up to this point, but what I have read has led me to want to add the following...

There are people out there paying for the use of a VPN in the belief that it gives them some increased anonymity.
For those people, let your paranoia think on this... if you were a govt agency keen on monitoring who says what, you would actually be smart to offer a VPN service, that way all the folks you most want to watch are passing their garbage through your own channels, you can monitor ther source, and their destination, and as further proof of the party involved, you've got their credit card details recorded against their purchase of your VPN service.
Personally, in light of the above, I consider a VPN just another layer of vulnerability of your details and your privacy, regarless of whoever is running the service.
