1466554 2020-02-07 20:29:00 Hi,

Recently, I have an issue to copy files from my laptop to external drive because they took long time (more than one day).

My external drive is “WD” (500 GB) and it still have enough space. I bought it more than five years ago.

Can someone explain to me why it takes so long to copy files to external drive?

Regards,

1466555 2020-02-07 21:20:00 Time can depend on many things, the type of Connection, Eg: USB 1, 2 or 3. USB 1 will be noticeably slower than 3.

The size of files large amounts take a longer time. Meaning if you are copying 1TB of multiple files its often quicker to do them in smaller amounts. The Specs of the computer as well. If you have a SSD drive ( main PC) then it will transfer faster than a mechanical drive.

Type of drive - WD Green which is slow will take longer than a WD Black.

Bit more info on what you are copying from - to would be more of accurate an answer.

I imaged (backed up) my Media Computer on Friday, took just over 4 hours to image 200GB over the LAN to a Workshop Server. So it all depends on how things are setup. Just about to image this Now, (been a while) 156GB

Thank you Wainutech.

Total files to be copied about 60 GB and consisted of docs, pictures and videos. My WD drive is blue colour.

1466557 2020-02-08 20:12:00 It can be a sign of a failing drive too. Seems rather a long time to me. piroska (17583)
1466558 2020-02-08 22:37:00 What type of USB is it? If it's USB 2 it can take an age. If USB 3 it should be relatively quick. Bryan (147)

I have USB2. My MB is 10 years old now (actually haven't had to change battery yet...)
Anyway. Copied over my entire Movies collection not long ago, more than 60GB. It didn't take an age....

1466560 2020-02-09 19:42:00 Chances are it's USB 2.0 but check if the USB port you are using is not USB 1.0 (some devices have these for mouse)

Have several HP Pocket drives (USB 2.0) which can be slow but plugged into USB 3.0 will run 2x faster
