23255 2001-10-31 11:53:00 Hi

I've just searched through the Press F1 archives on this problem and find that one question seems to be unanswered.

I am using W98 original edition and have suddenly developed a shutdown problem without any changes to the computer, and with a good exit sound file. Disabling fast shutdown seems to have fixed it but I'd like to download the patch from MS. Problem is, everything associated with the patch refers to W98SE only and I find no mention of a patch for plain vanilla W98.

Is it ok to use the W98SE version and is it a big download?

23256 2001-10-31 12:22:00 The so called 'patch' just does what you have already done - disable fast shutdown with the exact same setting but then it hides the setting control from you forever so there is no need to try the 'patch' at all as you have 'patched' it yourself.

Isn't MS great. :-))

23257 2001-10-31 19:59:00 For those that don't know how (like me):

Disabling fast shutdown in Windows 98 changes the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown

There is also a way to do it in Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Choose Tools Menu, System Configuration Utility. General Tab, click advanced. Should be an option Disable Fast Shutdown (there isn't on my Win98SE machine).

23258 2001-10-31 21:46:00 Well, well, well!

We live and learn! All that mystique and mumbo-jumbo I had to wade through where one line in the M$ knowledge base could have told all. If they de-geeked their technical writers we'd all be better off.

Now my computer shuts down ok and it doesn't seem to do that any slower than before, so what did 'Fast Shutdown' do to earn a place in the M$ hall of fame? Perhaps it did a triple backward somersault with double twist just to add class to the shut-down act and the hangs were caused by missing the mat (spotter was delayed exiting the registry) or perhaps scoring less than 9.9 will not compute. Cynical? Moi? Never.

Thanks to all.

Makes for amusing reading. :-)
