23152 2001-10-30 23:20:00 Currently use DCC to transfer mp3s between two computers (like watching glue set). Was wondering what the USB options are: data transfer rate, types, cost etc. Any thoughts appreciated. Guest (0)
23153 2001-10-30 23:34:00 USB isn't really designed for file transfers.

For the same price you could get 2 network cards and a cable.

Even 10mbs will probably be faster than USB.

23154 2001-10-30 23:40:00 I could be wrong... but I get the feeling that USB is around 2MBs.

Personally, I use 3 methods for file transfers between machines.

CD - If it is only odd transfers of files that are semi permanant, or to be shared amoung many computers its often best just to burn them to CD, this means you can restore them to any machine when you format.

Ethernet - For regular transfers, it is best to set up a peer-to-peer network. If it is only two computers, then just get 2 network cards and a length of Cross-over cable, this will let you connect two computers directly, at either 10 or 100MBs. If you have more than 2 computers you want to network, you are going to need a hub or switch, and if the budget is tight, just stick with normal twisted pair cable, its cheaper than crossover.

Move the hard drive - If it is once in a blue moon transfers of large ammounts of data, you can just remove your hard drive and insert it into the other machine, speeds of around 170 MBs depending on hard drives.
Its pretty easy to do, but if you arent sure how to do it, I would advise getting someone who does know to show you a couple of times first.

23155 2001-10-30 23:47:00 Most USB transfers run at about 6Mb/s, so is slower than using network card/cables, but a lot faster than using parallel or serial connections. Guest (0)
23156 2001-10-31 03:40:00 I thought USB was 12mps you may want to look at firewire as this is 400mbs I think but after all get 2 10/100 nics and a crossover cable and you will notice the difference.

23157 2001-10-31 08:11:00 Thankyou all for your comments, very helpful. One computer is a laptop & the other a desktop so will have to consider the options which will work for each - cheers. Guest (0)
