| 23297 | 2001-11-01 03:21:00 | Posted a problem last week with internal modem, now replaced with external DLinkDFM560E. Using kppp I can now dial into Xtra but connection drops after 9-12 seconds: 'The pppd daemon died unexpectedly. Exit status 16'. Seems to mean 'the link was terminated by the modem hanging up'. The log shows 'LCP terminated by peer'. I'm using PAP which Xtra says is OK. The pap-secrets file appears to be populated correctly, although the server column shows ppp0 and the IP addresses column is blank. I've tried with auto and manual DNS. Any ideas? | Guest (0) | ||
| 23298 | 2001-11-01 09:08:00 | That's odd; it seems as though you've tried everything obvious. Can you post the -entire- relevant section of /var/log/messages, please? Also, could you take us through exactly what settings you have within kppp (I'm only familiar with gnome-ppp, but kppp is probably similar). For the record, your /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file should contain only (except for hashed-out entries): loginname * password Even though Xtra claim that pap is fine (and so it should be), you might also try chap as well. |

Phew! I have tried a modified kppp-secrets file, replacing 'ppp0' in the server column with '*' as you suggested (no quote marks). My password does have quote marks in that file. |
