| 23276 | 2001-11-01 01:08:00 | Hi all Back in September I had quite a thread running on this particular problem but I never found an answer and gave up for a while. I have now done some more work on the problem and I think I need further help. In essence, I have a W98 machine as part of a small W2K network all accessing the internet via a hub and a Nokia Ni500. For the W2K machines, network and internet access is at the full capablity of the hub/modem. The W98 machine is a different story and when I last posted on F1, both network and download speed were about 10kbps. I tried everything suggested then gave up and bought a cheap 10/100 PCI card from DSE to see if this made a difference. To the extent that I can now download at 56kbps and transfer files between computers at similar speed, yes it did work but running two computers side by side (W98 and W2K)the comparison is 56kbps vs 522.4kbps. Something is throttling the ethernet connection on the W98 box and I would appreciate any suggestions as to what that might be. All the MTU etc settings have been tweaked so what else is there? Could it be a motherboard fault? BTW, when I got the old modem out it was a D-Link DE-220E Rev-B1 and was not PCI (is ISA?) Now that I can get the correct drivers for it I might reinstall but there doesn't seem to be a problem with the cards themselves. Any and all ideas/utilities/hacks/advice welcome. Thanks Jim |

| 23278 | 2001-11-01 02:35:00 | Hi tweak`e I originally set the MTU and RWIN to values recommended by a DSL site (can't remember what values but they were higher than the original) then checked then on line with another site that checked and said they were optimised. To do this I used a utility (tweakdun??)I downloaded but it made my computer unstable and kept popping up at odd times during boot so I deleted it once the job was done. Is there anything on the old PC World CDs that can do this job or can anybody point me to a suitable utility and also recommend settings for MTU and RWIN? I'm ok on registry editing so if you can give the values and point me to the appropriate keys I'll do it there. Since my last post the DSE PCI NIC has proven a bit of a liability as it doesn't like sharing an IRQ. It keeps going down which is a flaming nuisance. At least the old card was reliable! I have one spare IRQ so can anybody tell me how to force a card to locate on that number? Could solve all of my problems! I have downloaded drivers for the D-Link card so I might put that back in and see what happens with the right drivers. Cheers Jim |
