23404 2001-11-02 09:06:00 Hi

System is a PIII 550 with Intel SR440BX motherboard.

I took the plunge & bought 2 sticks of 256MB PC133 SDRAM from DSE. They installed OK but only read 256MB. I took one stick out and it then read 128MB so both sticks are working. RAM detection is automatic in the BIOS.

These are the 8x32MB sticks and I am wondering if my motherboard can't read this type and I might need the 16x16MB version.

I have read the MB manual but it isn't clear what type is supported. Can anybody confirm my suspicions?

Thanks

Jack

23405 2001-11-02 09:38:00 Its all to do with Density.

More than likley your board supports 256 but are the ram sticks you bought populated on both sides...????

If Not the most your motherboard will see is 128 per chip 1/2 of what you bought.....You will need to buy 512megs in order to see the full 256 or revert back to the DOUBLE sided 256megs chips...Which are dearer and hard to find as most suppliers are selling the new denisty type..

23406 2001-11-02 09:44:00 512mb?

I remember the old days when 48Kb was enough for most people. (let's not start on this, we could be here all day)

Lucky sod, be happy with 256Mb.

But seriously, Orac sounds like he know what he is talking about.

23407 2001-11-02 10:33:00 My board is also BX based and can only handle 128mb per slot. I think its a chipset limitation.

The high density/single sided stuff works ok.

23408 2001-11-02 11:32:00 Firstly take everything that I say with a large spoon of salt, but some of it may be relevant.

I have a P111 450 with Intel 440BX motherboard. The bus speed is 100mhz.

The book says it has 3 banks of 168 pins DIMM module sockets on board.

It says to use 8/16/32/64/128/256 Mb DIMM module DRAM.

The next line shows:

-8~766Mb SDRAM

I take this to mean that I could use 3 sticks of 256Mb DIMM SDRam to give me a total of 768Mb.

If this is correct, surely yours being later than mine, can take the 512Mb that you want?

You listed yours as SR440BX, maybe the R makes the difference compared to mine?

I will leave the more learned ones to shoot me down in flames.

Good luck

23409 2001-11-02 18:48:00 I'm experiencing a similar problem at the moment.

My board a 'Jetway 993AN' says it can take 1.5GB in the three dimm slots, upto 150mhz.

So I bought a single 512mb pc133 stick of legend ram, with a lifetime warranty.

Lo and behold, it only sees 256mb. It turns out according to Legend, that the latest archtecture of their ram chips, is not recognised by old mother boards like mine.(18mths old). Don't worry though, in our fully automated, robotic factory in Adelaide, we have every motherboard in the world, and will simply re-engineer a chip for your motherboard.

But first of all let us replace the ram chip in your computer to make sure it's not a faulty one.

At this stage the chip is on its way to my local computer shop. I'll let you all know what eventually happens.

23410 2001-11-02 21:12:00 Thanks guys

To confirm a few points:

1) The SR440BX board has only two DIMM sockets and no SIMMs.

2) The MB manual says it can take up to 512MB SDRAM which in my book means 1 x 512MB chip or 2 x 256MB.

3) The manual also says I can use single or double sided DIMMs of up to 256MB. My original 128MB sticks are double sided.

4) My new RAM is single sided and if I understand ORAC correctly, double sided would have 8 x 16MB chips on each side of the stick whereas the ram I bought has 8 x 32MB chips on one side only. Could this be an addressing problem?

5) I have looked on DSE's website (dse.co.nz) and see that they sell both types at the same price so I'll go back and exchange these and post the result later today if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for the help, don't you guys ever sleep?

23411 2001-11-02 22:58:00 Point 2.
I would interperate that to mean 2x256mb not 1 512mb
