| 23330 | 2001-11-01 08:37:00 | I have a new PC running Windows XP Home delivered a few days ago. Being new to the internet I installed a trial version of Norton Personal Firewall. Now I keep getting messages from the firewall on and offline advising that - 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services is attemting to access the internet.' Application:svchost.exe Time: whatever Remote Service: outward udp on port 1900 Remote Address: 239.255.255.250. I dont know what to do about this. Nortons says to set rules if there are continual attempts to access the internet but I think that this is some sort of Microsoft programme running. Please advise what this programme is that is causing this. I tried to find out via the Microsoft site but became lost on the screens. |

It's some kind of new plug and thingie for network devices. That IP isn't really routable; if the packets actualy go out your modem they shouldn't get much further. There's more info at the URL below, though this article fails to get into the details, namely that the service uses UDP port 1900 broadcast to IP 239.255.255.250. You can probably either block those packets or not; won't matter unless you have 'UPnP' devices. You might be able to stop it by turning off the 'SSDP Discovery Service', if you know how to do that. support.microsoft.com |
