| 23399 | 2001-11-02 08:04:00 | My Word97 has suddenly decided that it doesn't like the spaces in my folders or filenames. For the file: c:\my documents\new file.doc It comes up with something like: 'Can't open the file, c:\my.doc' and then 'Can't open the file, documents\new.doc' and then it opens the file. H E L P Thanks, Greg |

I spent ages on a machine once, copied the set up for Excel, into the Doc one for Word. It worked but it took ages. On mine: In Explorer, Tools, Options, File Types, find Microsoft Word, choose edit, look at OPEN. Application used to perform action box: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\winword.exe' /n DDE is checked, first entry is: [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen('%1')] The speech marks are the key. They might not come out right on screen here. Best of luck. Robo. |

It is the spaces in the long file names and the lack of the correct sets of speech marks around the file name in that config. Check again, maybe, really closely. What displayed on the web page may be missing some of the speech marks because it is converting to HTML. Check against Excel in your PC. Regards, Robo. |

It sort of does, but when opened, it comes up with: 'Do you want to revert to the saved 'File'' Also, I have compared my file assoc settings with another comp running Word (I don't have Excel), and they are IDENTICAL. Quote mark for qoute mark etc. Am thinking of reformatting the whole machine anyway, so probably not a big problem, but I was wondering why I can't fix this problem. Greg V |
