23591 2001-11-04 08:49:00 HI.
Can I boot into dos in WinME? I know your not supposed to but i cant believe they have yet eliminated dos from windows yet.

Once I get to dos, can I do a proper format rather than a pathetic product recovery thing from manufactures cd?

thanx

23592 2001-11-04 09:35:00 There is absolutely no reason why you cannot boot into DOS with ME. It is still only windows 9xx sitting on top of DOS. If all you want is a DOS Prompt go Start>Run>type dosprmpt (note the omission of the 'O' in prompt) in the dialogue box and click ok. Or go start>programs>accessories and in the drop down list there should be a shortcut to a DOS Prompt. If not and you plan to use the DOS Prompt regularly go into your windows folder, right click my computer on the desktop, click on explore and select the windows folder, locate MS-Dos Prompt, right click on it and send to desktop or create a shortcut to the desktop. If you want a full blown DOS session you will have to make a boot disk through add remove programs and then boot off the floppy (which you should have made by now anyway) and then you can do your fdisk, formatting etc. from there. 23593 2001-11-04 21:09:00 Apparently Dos is still in Me but has been hidden. A 'Real DOS-MODE' patch is available. I can not remember where I downloaded it from but I think it may have been C-NET.It is called 'Real DOS-MODE Patch for Windows Me. by Reines [MFD] [v1.3 : Aug 15 2000]' It modifies 'IO.SYS', 'COMMAND.COM' and 'REGENV32.EXE' To unhide it. Sorry I can`t be more precise about it`s origin but I can give you a copy if you can`t get it. Guest (0)
23594 2001-11-05 04:29:00 Try holding Ctrl down as it boots up. This gets into one of the recovery modes ; which includes a DOS option. The Start/Programs/ ... contains a MSDOS logo which invokes a DOS window as before. I thought I might have to use the recovery floppy method to get an old DOS game going, but after I used that window to run the install, I found I could make a shortcut for the game and put that on the desktop. Apart from the game having to use SVGA (and speaker for sound) the hardest part was making the 3.5' floppies from the 5.25' ones. Guest (0)
