23509 2001-11-03 05:19:00 I have a computer that has trouble booting (running W98). Out of about 15 boots, it got up and running maybe 5 times (including attempts in safe mode, which was slightly more successful). Once it's running, it goes for a while then does the 'Blue Screen of Death' thing (mostly, when I try running the troubleshoot files in help....). Some of the things that are happening:
After the memory test at startup, displays 'Detecting HDD Primary Slave: Failed' (also for Secondary slave). It mentions nothing about Primary Master or anything else.
Often, it will get as far as the Windows title screen (sometimes not!), then freeze (hard disk stops completely).
Sometimes, during startup, it displays 'Windows Protection Error- you need to restart'

Just before it started playing up, a new wallpaper was added, and apparently someone changed a format of something (no idea what, they wouldn't say, and it's not my pc...)- it would appear to be something important, as apparently when they did it, some computer expert who was present told them off, but they have been reluctant to try fixing it.

Any ideas??

23510 2001-11-03 06:00:00 Failing to find primary slave and secondry slave is probably nothing to worry about, especially if none are present.

It's just your bios set to auto for them. You could disable that in the bios if they are not present.

Windows freezing during startup, often happens when windows looks for the CD, particually if its an old one or if some files are corrupt.

Running scandisk in windows would be good if you could get there.

It might pay to boot from a W98 startup disk with CD support, and run setup from the CD, you won't lose anything on your hardrive.

23512 2001-11-03 10:15:00 It sounds quite serious to me, back up all personal files(i.e. favourites, inbox, my docs etc.) re-install windows.

My opinion,

23513 2001-11-03 22:29:00 I reinstall w98 once, when it finished, it went to endless loop rebooting before finished booting, So I had to boot to safe mode delete all the object (drivers) from control panel => system => device manager, then as it rebooted, install drivers from manufactures installation CDROM.
