23488 2001-11-03 03:39:00 Hi, what motherboards (not to expensive) would you's recommend for an AMD Athlon and DDR memory.
Also this may be a stupid question but do all motherboards fit all cases in the way of serial, parallel, and USB ports?

Cheers

23489 2001-11-03 04:04:00 have a look at Dick Smiths site. Cat. no. XH6359. I don`t know the make but specs are great. They are specialling it at $229.00 - down from $391.00 in their catalogue. Guest (0)
23490 2001-11-03 04:50:00 Get off Dick smith's sells rubbish, if you want a quality mobo look at the likes of abit, asus or gigabyte.

With mobos you get what you pay for so get quality.

23491 2001-11-03 07:32:00 the main thing you need to look at is what chipset does the board uses.

the via kt266 is a tad slow.

amd761 is an oldy but is speedy.

sis735 is a new one, not many boards advaiable with it, very fast and also cheap.

via kt266A new one just come out, the fasted chipset out.

as far as DS goes, cheak what they actual manafacture of the board is. highly likely to be a brand name board. if not don't touch with a 20ft barge pole as their might not be any support for it later. such as new bios for new cpus etc. nothing worse than 6 months later you cannot upgrade your cpu because there is no upgraded bios advailable. ditto for drivers

23492 2001-11-03 09:43:00 The DSE m/b is a FIC, look at their site:
http://www.fic.com.tw
Its probably ok.
DSE doesnt sell rubbish, and Ive also been in electronics one way or another, for nearly as long as Tom B, but as always it pays to look around and do your homework.
