23728	2001-11-06 04:19:00	Is it just me or do other people find that every time they want to play an MPG or an AVI that Windows Media Player wants another codec? And do they find they never load, and when they do they never work? This is driving me nuts. I get one thing without sound (the last episode of Star Trek Voyager, not something untoward, they keep their clothes on) or the sound with some gormless and sad pychedelia (remember when people used to drip paint on records and watch it spin around? It feels like that). I can't see how to load codecs with any sort of control. Should I use something else for watching my video files? Would be interested to hear others experiences. Regards, Robo. 23731	2001-11-06 05:10:00	Thanks, guys. Tried that site that 'e' suggested. Downloaded a couple and then my machine sucked the big kahuna. Again, it asks me to download the codec, I say yes, it does it. It plays it, and I get no audio. My lip reading isn't that good, and I can never manage to lip read aliens in heavy make-up. How on earth is a regular person supposed to tell what sort of AVI they are looking at? Yours, a very frustrated Robo.	Guest (0)
23732	2001-11-06 06:44:00	Hello Robo, I've struck this problem a few times lately, even on my own machine, I think the problem lies in the amount of diffeent codecs being auto downloaded by various software at present, this seems to result in conflicts and clips that would previously play, suddenly start behaving strange or just not working, in my case it was after I upgraded from DivX 3 alpha to DivX 4, to solve it I had to manually delete the old codecs and then reinstall DivX4 anew, on one other system the only way we got every thing working satisfactory, was to run a clean install then load DivX 4, everything then run smoothly and at present DivX 4 seems to recognise all present mpeg compressions (until next week when they release the next super duper compression format) Regards Alan	Guest (0)
23733	2001-11-06 07:23:00	Hmmm This might explain why I have some MPEGs with sound and some without. Some play with sound from the original download but won't play sound after they have been saved to disk. If I want to load DivX4, where do I look to get rid of older codec's. Are there ny file names or extensions to watch out for? I've never much worried about sound before but Jetstream makes larger files easy to download so the MPEG wave is catching up with me. 23734	2001-11-06 07:56:00	Rob, Try the DivX 4.02 Codec which is quite new... and has the ability (apparently) to play all DivX formats... www.divx.com the file's called something like DivX4CodecInstaller.exe hope this works! Mike	Guest (0)
23735	2001-11-06 09:25:00	There is a tool in Win98 (mplayer.exe) and NT based Win (mplay32.exe) which if used to open the file that Media Player cannot play properly will usually tell you exactly what codec you need to play the file properly. Just find the exe mentioned (usually in system folder) for your version of Windows then launch it (doubleclick on it) then File/Open the file you are trying to play. 23736	2001-11-06 20:32:00	Thanks John, tried that but it opened it fine and played it without audio. Still no clue about it. I have gone back to the guy I got it off and he doesn't get sound either (doh!). He is going back to his guy, to see what the story is. Codecs suck. Seems like if you load a hacked codec (if you can tell it is hacked) you are buggered for others. Also, seems you have to load a different codec for every avi that has been encoded with a different one. You would think there was an easier way to do this. Robo.	Guest (0)
