23887 2001-11-07 23:50:00 I am running a home network with three old pentiums running Win95 and a PII (350mhz, 384MB, 30GB) running Win2k. The problem is that some times the win95 machines can see the Win2k machine in Network Neighbourhood, but when I try to connect it says the device does not exist on the network. (although it is still happily serving the internet). This seems to happen randomly, in both Network Neighbourhood and when I have network drives mapped. I have even tried logging in on the remote computers with a username and password that is set up as an administrator on the Win2k machine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

23888 2001-11-08 03:29:00 I've had a similar problem before, but the other way around. I couldn't see computers on my network, but I could still talk to them and access their shared drives happily. Solved this problem by using a lmhosts file. This file specifies what computers are on the network, so that the computers don't have to find them (and a bit more besides). Each computer on the network must have a copy of this file, hence it is not a good solution for large or networks that constantly change. Have a look in the windows help files for more information. Have a look at Q258717 in Microsoft's knowledge base. The title is 'Configuring Windows 2000 Professional to work in a peer-to-peer workgroup'.

It answers most questions though I am about to post another one that arises directly out of this article. You can also search Press F1 for w2k/w98 to find a previous thread dealing with this problem.
