23969 2001-11-08 11:02:00 I own an ageing 4.2 gb Quantum Fireball hard drive that I currently have partitioned into 2 2.1 gb parts. This was mainly through accident, not design, as I only had a Windows 95 bootdisc, not 98, and so I didn't have access to FAT32.

I'm upgrading my computer, and I'd like to repartition and have 1 4.2 gb FAT32 partition. However, the second sector is pretty full of bad sectors, and nasty ones too. If any data is installed on a bad sector, the computer freezes and makes painful grinding noises each time it tries to access it.

Through 10 or 11 lengthy scandisk sessions, I managed to get all of the bad sectors marked. My question is: when I repartition, will the bad sectors stay marked, or will I have to go through the looooong process again? (each pass takes upwards of 3 hours.)

Thanks if you reply. And oh, yes, I know I need to ditch this tiny, buggy hard drive, but it's all I can afford for the time being :)

Thanks again.

23970 2001-11-08 11:13:00 You could put a copy of scandisk on a boot floppy, and you will be able to check the drive straight after you format it. Guest (0)
23971 2001-11-08 12:57:00 Typically, in my experience the bad sectors stay marked through a format and repartition. I think the only time when the bad sectors have become 'unmarked' is when doing a low-level format (which is a bit archaic now I think) Guest (0)
23972 2001-11-09 02:12:00 Umm, I think that's not quite accurate. The partitioning writes new FAT entries. The sectors marked as bad by scandisk are treated like any other sectors. But the format will mark the bad ones in the tables, and it should give similar results. But run scandisk or NDD or any other similar programme you have after doing the format. You want the toughest test available to flag bad spots before you put information on the disk. And save up for that new one... Guest (0)
