23943 2001-11-08 08:24:00 Hi. I have an old 486 dx2 66mhz machine (20meg ram) running win 3.1 If it can handle it (very slow i know) would win95 perform faster than 98? or are the pretty much the same? I just want to put it on my network so it needs 95/98.

Is this possible or am I really out of my mind like they say I am?

thanx

23945 2001-11-08 09:57:00 You don't need to upgrade your Win 3.x machine, as it will network with Win 95 OK.

You will be able to open files with long filenames, but only be able to see the 8 character version of the filename.

23946 2001-11-08 10:09:00 Ya, like K O said, go for windows 95 if you think you need it (i recommend so) some suggestions: firstly see if you can overclock your cpu then get some more ram, available 2nd hand from trademe.co.nz and lastly add a bit more hard disk space. window 98 although not recommended can run on you're sort of machine but not very well, don't do it unless you really need it, i'd go for win 95, i have p100 32ram and 850mb and i'm using win95 great! 23947 2001-11-08 11:07:00 Don't bother with overclocking its a waste of time.

If you choose the right software you can have quite a useable system, especially with 20mb RAM.

Go with win95 preferably the first one, aka OSR1 or 95a, and don't install Internet Explorer.

Do a clean install, as its takes up much less space as avoids problems.

If you need a browser use Opera (www.opera.com), i've found it faster than Netscape3 on similar hardware.
For most other software, don't go for the latest versions, eg for email find a copy of Eudora 3 (if Opera's builtin one is inadequate).

How do u mean win 3.1 can network to 95? if so, will it nwtork to 98, or more to the point my win98 + winME network.

how is it done? will i need aditional software or will it simply recognise in windows. (I have win 3.11 for workgroups)

thanx

23949 2001-11-09 04:03:00 Don't even try to overclock it. A DX266 with 20MB will run W95 acceptably fast. More memory would help a bit. WFW3.11 might be better, but it's a matter of taste. Guest (0)
