23926 2001-11-08 05:54:00 I posted a question some time ago about difficulties in getting a W98/W2k network going. I fudged a solution to my particular problems but a subsequent enquiry from another victim brought a very helpful referral to Q258717 on the MS Knowledge base.

This seems to answer most questions but under 'Cause' it says that the problem occurs if all the computers in a peer-to-peer network do not have: (1) a common networking protocol, (2) a common workgroup, (3) common user names and passwords.

I'm OK with the first two conditions but it is the last one that confuses me. How can the computers have common user names and passwords? Surely this would defeat the purpose of having passwords if every computer on the network used the same user name and password.

Am I missing something here or is Microsoft giving up on their own OS connectivity problems and suggesting users compromise security to overcome their muck up?

23927 2001-11-08 07:36:00 Win2k is more security conscince than any win9x version..

You must make a user list complete with passwords and permissions on the win2k box of all the people who want to access the machine.

So user 'A' can logon and see the printer but thats all and user'B' can see the 'c'drive but thats all..etc

So when they logon on the win98box their username and password is verifyed by win2k
if all is passed asscess is granted.

To set up the new users you must have administrator rights and it is done throught 'administrive tools' in control panel.

Have a go..let us know how you go..

Where do I create this user list? Is there a file name and location like LMHosts that I read about in a recent post?
