I have a Nokia Ni500 from DSE that was cheap, a dream to install, goes like a rocket and hasn't glitched once in 6 months. I have four computers running through it via a hub and they all work well. The biggest advantages I see for the external is the speed of installation and the fact that I can turn it off and on a couple of times a day to change my IP address (I may be wrong on that last point but I recall reading on Press F1 that it was a good idea if you were going to be full time on line even with a firewall). I saw a post some time back where a telecom faultman said that they had more problems withj internal than external and that USB was the most unreliable connection method. There's a lot of truth in the suggestion that the Nokia-Telecom link up makes for better and more reliable service. I researched the market very thoroughly before settling on the Ni500 and I'm not sorry! Billy 8-{) |

Having said that, I've never had an external and have had no problem with the internal modems themselves. It has only been a matter of spare IRQs. However, as far as I know, if you are on JetSTART, your ISP will drop your connection 2-3 times a day so that your IP address changes. However, if you are on JetSTREAM, your IP address is static so no amount on resetting will alter it. I use an internal 3com HomeConnect ADSL modem. Works fine and it comes with software that allows you to reset your modem without having to shut down the computer. |
